Sotheby’s London Announce Sale of South Asian Modern & Contemporary Art

Posted: 17 May 2011 10:10 PM PDT

artwork: Maqbool Fida Husain - The Sixth Seal - Signed 'Husain' in Devanagari lower centre and inscribed 'M F Husain, The Sixth Seal, "64"' on reverse. Oil on canvas, 91.5 by 203.3 cm. (36 by 80 in.). - Estimate: 400,000 - 500,000 GBP. - Photo: Sotheby's.

LONDON.- Sotheby's London announce its sale of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art to take place on the 31st May 2011. Comprised of 62 lots, several with unprecedented provenance, the auction is expected to fetch in excess of £2.8 million. Highlighting the sale will be works by Sayed Haider Raza. His Bindu is an important 1985 work and is one of the earliest large depictions of the Bindu by the artist. Raza's preoccupation with nature is apparent in his use of primary colours to highlight the elements of nature; red, blue, yellow, white and black respectively represent fire, water, wind, earth and the sun. It is estimated at £400,000-600,000.

artwork: Manjit Bawa -Untitled, 2003 Signed in English, on reverse. Oil on canvas, 141 x 117.5 cm. Estimate: 100,000 - 150,000 GBP. - Photo: Sotheby's.Another important work by Raza from his Paris period is Rue des Fossés St Jaques, an oil on canvas estimated at £300,000-500,000. Raza and his wife, the painter Janine Mongillat, were friends of the current owner's family and they rented a studio from them at Rue des Fossés St Jaques. Painted a year after Raza was awarded the 'Prix de la Critique', this painting depicts the view from the studio window and represents an important early phase in Raza's career where he abandons the confines of traditional watercolour and takes on oil developing a unique idiom where space and colour seem to feed into one another. In 1958, the painting was photographed with the artist by Henri Cartier Bresson.

Maqbool Fida Husain's The Sixth Seal, estimated at £400,000-500,000, exemplifies the eclectic balance between Husain's cubist modern style of painting and Indian traditional sensibility and subject matter. This work, which was formerly in the Collection of Chester and Davida Herwitz , incorporates so many of the artist's most recognisable themes and symbols. Traditional forms of ancient Indian miniatures, sculptures, dance and folk art manifest themselves in one painting. The painting is made up of six vignettes a compositional device used by the artist in a number of his early works from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This work is published in Bartholomew and Kapur's seminal book on Husain and was exhibited at Oxford's Museum of Modern Art's India: Myth and Reality, Aspects of Modern Indian art in 1982.

Illustrated is Jehangir Sabavala's oil on canvas The Tree, which is estimated at £65,000-75,000. This painting is part of the Tungabhadra landscapes that were painted in 1965 following a visit by the Sabavalas to South India. The artist was moved by the ruins at Hampi and in particular by the starkness of the artificial lake in the Tungabhadra river, at the border between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

A further highlight is Manjit Bawa's Untitled estimated at £100,000-150,000. Manjit's subjects are often inspired by ancient iconography and myths but his primary concern was not with the narrative of the works but with their spatial and chromatic relationships. The artist's use of colour was grounded in his formal training as a silk-screen printer and his study of Rajput and Pahari miniature paintings. The simplicity of line and form is contrasted by the subtle graduation of colour and the artist's use of chiaroscuro. His figures possess a plasticity; sculptural in form yet suspended weightlessly in a space that is void of time and context.

The sale will also include Subodh Gupta's Hungry God, estimated at £300,000-400,000. Subodh Gupta's monumental sculpture Hungry God, which in 2010 was exhibited at SESC Pompéia's Urban Manners 2, Contemporary Artists from India in Sao Paulo, is composed of a wavelike mass of stainless steel pans, milk pails and tiffins. These steel utensils have now become iconic symbols of Gupta's work. The artist uses these domestic household objects to comment on the underlying social and economic tensions that arise from India's progressive modernisation. These objects represent familiar features of Indian life which continue to transcend the conflicts between urban and rural existence; wealth and poverty; the religious and the vernacular.

artwork: Subodh Gupta - "Very Hungry God", 2006 - Monumental sculpture Estimated at £300,000-400,000 at Sotheby's London May sale.

The auction will also feature Subodh Gupta's Untitled, estimated at £120,000-180,000, which was exhibited in The Empire Strikes Back Indian Art Today show at London's Saatchi Gallery in 2010. Gupta's preoccupation with ready-made objects from India transcends the boundaries of the mediums with which he works in. In this painting, stainless steel and copper-bottomed pots, pans and tiffins occupy a position of importance. Immaculately painted, these objects are revered by the artist and suggest an air of ambition and prosperity, congruent with India's flourishing economy. The photorealistic detail of these pots are starkly contrasted with the abstract, minimalistic background. They hang seductively in the foreground, alluding to the complex and evolving aspect of consumerism in India.

Two early oils by Francis Newton Souza's Untitled, estimated at 25,000-35,000, is an oil on board dated 1954. The sale will also include Francis Newton Souza's Untitled, an oil on board, estimated at £35,000-45,000. Acquired directly from the artist by the writer and poet Stephen Spender, both these works are property from the Estate of Sir Stephen and Lady Spender

Los Angeles.- Merry Karnowsky Gallery is proud to present Convergence, a solo exhibition by artist Kent Williams from May 21st until June 18th. When fighting is no longer an option, one surrenders, come what may. One must create a connective trust with him or herself alone and plunge hand-in-hand into an unknown so vast, any and everything is possible. It is a trust that is at once both a finale and an introduction. In his exhibition of paintings and drawings, Kent Williams promises that to surrender is not necessarily to give up, and he rewards those who are either hopeless enough, or courageous enough, to submit with a private and sinking comfort inside the eye of the storm. The reassurance he offers is that there is a bridge between the before and after, and it is here; here is now.

North Okanagan, B.C.- The Vernon Public Art Gallery will show "David Newkirk: Fault Lines and Fantasies" from May 26th through July 28th. David Newkirk's body of paintings titled "Fault Lines and Fantasies" addresses the issues surrounding the discourse about the viability of contemporary painting. During the last few years, Newkirk has been developing conceptual strategies that reflect his interest in the construction of images that are informed by various approaches to art making, and specifically the contemporary painting practices that explore the possibilities of a synthesis of representational renderings and geometric and organic abstraction. The images examine the correlation of representation and abstraction conceptually, while the actual execution is based on a tension between elements at once defying order and predictability.

Industry & Technology Explored in Two Exhibitions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

Posted: 17 May 2011 07:04 PM PDT

artwork: Donna Dennis - "Deep Station, View from the Track", 1987 - Lithograph - 25¾" x 35¼" in. - Collection of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art © the artist. - On view in "The Industrial Modern" at the MMoCA from May 28th through September 4th.

Madison, WI.- Two new exhibitions at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art present works from the museum's permanent collection that explore impacts of industry and technology. "Picturing Technology: Land and Machine" opens on May 21st in MMoCA's main galleries, while "The Industrial Modern" opens a week later on May 28th in the State Street Gallery. Both exhibitions will run through the summer, "Land and Machine" until August 21st and "The Industrial Modern" until September 4th. From the invention of the wheel to industrialization to the digital age, new technologies have been associated with intellectual and cultural advances. And yet throughout the ages, there have been reactions against technology — movements that oppose the advances of science and innovation in favor of more natural lifestyles.

"In Picturing Technology: Land and Machine", MMoCA's curator of exhibitions, Jane Simon, explores artists' reactions to technology in the rural environment. With drawings, paintings, photographs, and prints by nearly 40 artists, the exhibition demonstrates responses to technology ranging from alarm to disdain to enthusiasm. The photographs of O. Winston Link, for example, reveal the contemporary viewer's nostalgia for older technologies. Link's images of locomotives in hinterland America address our collective mythology of westward expansion and prosperity. Likewise, a series of nine photographs by Archie Lieberman demonstrate how technology has transformed our relationship to landscape, agriculture, and animals. Lieberman's images of rural life show the realities of farming life, as with a photograph of Margaret Dunbar and her daughter using bottles to feed hungry calves. Rather than separating the farmers from their calves, this technological innovation appears to enhance their tie. Forced Bloom 4 (2006), by Alyson Shotz, is one of several works in the exhibition that utilize or address capabilities of digital technology. Recent computer programs have allowed information and the storage of information to mushroom, triggering both positive and negative associations. By presenting viewers with "loaded images" that spark both kinds of reactions, the exhibition raises questions about the role and value of technology in our lives. Picturing Technology also presents works by Thomas Arndt, Warrington Colescott, Jim Dine, Vernon Fisher, and Claes Oldenburg, among others.

The Industrial Modern explores artists' conflicted responses to industry, labor, and the urban environment from the middle of the nineteenth century to contemporary times. In doing so, the exhibition explores the tensions inherent in the "culture of progress." Starting in the eighteenth century, the enormous energy of the Industrial Revolution began to transform the physical, economic, and socio-political landscapes of both Europe and the United States. The changes—including urbanization, mechanization, and regimented labor—coincided with a growing interest among western artists in accurately representing the rhythms and realities of everyday life. Focusing on workers and strikers, factories and machines, skyscrapers and city centers, bridges and railroads, docks and shipyards—the shapes of steel, steam, concrete, and human labor—artworks in The Industrial Modern explore scenes previously deemed unworthy of serious artistic representation. William Gropper, for example, a committed left-wing radical, infused his works with a socio-political message, championing the cause of the exploited worker and highlighting the social injustices characteristic of the modern industrial age. In contrast, Donna Dennis eschews reference to human presence, focusing instead on the dingy interior of a vacant subway station. Light from three stark bulbs illuminates the impressive vernacular architecture, while simultaneously calling attention to the emptiness of the cavernous space and hinting at themes of desolation and urban alienation. The Industrial Modern also presents drawings, paintings, photographs, and prints by William Klein, Louis Lozowick, Samuel L. Margolies, Joseph Pennell, and Ben Shahn, among many others.

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is a nonprofit, independent organization that exists to exhibit, collect, preserve, and interpret modern and contemporary art. After a distinguished 105-year history in borrowed and refurbished spaces, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art opened to the public on April 23, 2006, in a new facility within the Overture Center for the Arts. Designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, the museum's exhilarating facility offers 51,500 square feet of space for the study, presentation, and conservation of modern and contemporary art, as well as a 7,100-square-foot rooftop sculpture garden. Public amenities include spacious galleries, a 230-seat lecture hall, a children's classroom, a new-media gallery, and a study center for drawings, prints, and photographs. Like the rest of Overture Center, the facility was made possible by the extraordinary generosity of W. Jerome Frautschi, a long-time friend of the museum. The museum's collection traces its origins to a major gift from Rudolph and Louise Langer in 1968.

Through donations and museum purchases, the collection has grown to become an important community resource. Works span the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and include paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, and drawings. Romare Bearden, Deborah Butterfield, John Steuart Curry, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Cindy Sherman are among the many esteemed artists represented in the collection. Exhibitions are the cornerstone of MMoCA's public programs and have featured many of the most respected artists of the last century, including Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Sol LeWitt, George Segal, Jim Dine, Rodney Graham, Georgia O'Keeffe, Claes Oldenburg, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and John Wilde. The main galleries, located on the second floor, host the museum's major exhibitions. The Henry Street Gallery presents exhibitions from the museum's permanent collection while the State Street Gallery offers a changing roster of exhibitions and installations. MMoCA's rooftop sculpture garden presents major works on a rotating basis in an illuminated garden setting. Visit the museum's website at ... http://mmoca.org
