The Wichita Art Museum Presents Some Treasures From its Vaults

artwork: Steve Berman - "60 Million Gumballs with 10 Winners" - Acrylic on Masonite - Collection of the Wichita Art Museum, Kansas. On view in "Been In The Dark: What You Haven't Seen Lately" until October 23rd.

Wichita, KS.- The Wichita Art Museum is currently showing an exhibition of artworks that have been in storgage for years. "Been In The Dark: What You Haven't Seen Lately" remains on view at the museum until October 23rd. "Been In the Dark: What You Haven't Seen Lately" is an exhibition of artworks that have been in the vaults – literally in the dark – for years without having been put on display. For some of the art, this will be the first time it has ever been shown. These galleries are filled with a compilation of seemingly random objects, whose apparent relation is the fact that they haven't been shown in a long while.

artwork: James Penney - "Industrial Structures", 1955 Oil on canvas - The Roland P. Murdock Collection at the Wichita Art Museum, Kansas. The idea for Been In the Dark came from experience being in the vaults and seeing interesting objects that had not been shown in some time. Surely others would want to see them as well! Usually, these objects hadn't been shown for simply practical reasons, such as not relating to the themes of past exhibitions. Now with no theme other than underexposure, they have the occasion to receive the attention they deserve. While there is no subject or style that unites the objects in "Been In The Dark", it would be misleading to say that the exhibition is a Dada-like random assemblage of objects.

It is hoped that the visitor will find subtle relationships in the movement of one object to another – a rhythm of related or contrasting compositions, the weaving of color harmonies, and the whimsical juxtaposition of subjects. The installation is intended to be a pleasure to experience as a whole – as a viewing process – as well as on the level of the appreciation of individual works of art.

The Wichita Art Museum is an art museum located in Wichita, Kansas. It was established in 1915, when Louise Murdock's Will created a trust to start a collection of art works by "American painters, potters, sculptors, and textile weavers." The collection includes works by Mary Cassatt, Arthur G. Dove, Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyshoi, John Marin, Paul Meltsner, Horace Pippin, Maurice Prendergast, Albert Pinkham Ryder and Charles Sheeler. The Museum's lobby features a ceiling and chandelier made by Dale Chihuly. Visit the museum's website at ... http://wichitaartmuseum.org

Brooklyn Museum Hosts A Long-Term Installation at Their Luce Center for American Art

artwork: Edward Hicks (American, 1780–1849) - The Peaceable Kingdom, circa 1833–34. - Oil on canvas, 44.3 x 59.8 cm. - Brooklyn Museum, Dick S. Ramsay Fund

Brooklyn, NY - This major installation of more than three hundred fifty objects from the Brooklyn Museum's premier collection of American art integrates a vast array of fine and decorative arts (silver, furniture, ceramics, and textiles) ranging in date from the colonial period to the present. For the first time, major objects from these exceptional collections are joined by selections from the Museum's important holdings of Native American and Spanish colonial art. Motivated at least in part by a desire to compete with the European art that was fast overtaking the market in the United States, young American artists sought to enhance the sophistication and cosmopolitanism of their productions through contact with foreign cultures. Many of these Americans took pride in their nationality but no longer found it central to their work. This major exhibition is ongoing.

AP Photographer Peter Hillebrecht Remembers When the Berlin Wall was Built

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 09:21 PM PDT

artwork: The Berlin Wall was the frontline of the Cold War: 99 miles of concrete that divided not just a city but a continent. Before it fell, the Wall was the most potent symbol of the chasm between East and West. And for 28 years it was a barrier that split families and kept parents from their children. By the time it fell on November 9, 1989, it was stained with the blood of over 250 people shot trying to escape from East Berlin to a new life in the West.

BERLIN (AP).- Fifty years after his pictures of the Berlin Wall going up were published around the globe, former AP photographer Peter Hillebrecht slowly walked along a cobblestone strip that serves as a reminder of the barrier that once divided the German capital — and relived the day. "I got a phone call at 2:30 in the morning from an editor telling me that the East Germans had started building a wall through the city," the 81-year-old said during a recent visit to Berlin, ahead of the 50th anniversary Saturday of the building of the wall. "So I ran out and took some of the first pictures at night, and then many more during daylight in the Tiergarten neighborhood and Brandenburg Gate where the East German soldiers had started shoveling and put up fences."

The Orlando Museum of Art Presents a Tony Robbin Retrospective

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:51 PM PDT

artwork: Tony Robbin - "D-53", 2006 - Digital print on paper - 30" x 40" - Collection of Lisa and Joe Jensen. On view at the Orlando Museum of Art in "Tony Robbin: A Retrospective, Paintings and Drawings 1970-2010" until October 30th.

Orlando, FL.- The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) is pleased to present a retrospective exhibition of Tony Robbin's paintings and sculptures, which spans a period of forty years and reveals an artist whose focus and insight has produced an extraordinary body of work. "Tony Robbin: A Retrospective, Paintings and Drawings 1970-2010" is on view at the museum until October 30th. Robbin's central concern over this period was to explore strategies for representing four-dimensional space in two- and three-dimensional abstract art. The results were works that offer the viewer a dazzling visual experience grounded in the artist's rigorous understanding of the principles of higher-dimensional geometry. Robbin has noted: "Artists who are interested in four-dimensional space are not motivated by a desire to illustrate new physical theories. . . . We are motivated by a desire to complete our subjective experience by inventing new aesthetic and conceptual capabilities." His imaginative power to bring together the worlds of art and science successfully can be seen in this exhibition.

Robbin has had over 25 solo exhibitions since his debut at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1974, and has been included in over 100 group exhibitions in 12 countries. He was an originator of the Pattern and Decoration movement in contemporary art. Robbin holds the patent for the application of Quasicrystal geometry to architecture, and has implemented this geometry for a large-scale architectural sculpture based on quasicrystal patterns at the Danish Technical University in Lyngby, Denmark, as well as one for the city of Jacksonville, Florida. He is a pioneer in the computer visualization of four-dimensional geometry. Since 1981, his realtime rotation programs of four-dimensional figures have been useful for obtaining an intuitive feel for four-dimensional space, and quasicrystal space. The OMA has long recognized Tony Robbin as an important and innovative artist and has demonstrated this through acquiring and exhibiting  his work. The OMA is grateful to the collectors who generously lent works for this exhibition, including Cindy and J. D. Alexander, Lisa and Joe Jensen, Linda and William Malzone, Eileen and David Peretz, Norma and William D. Roth and Marcia and Howard Zipser. The OMA also thanks fellow artists Joyce Kozloff and Robert Kushner, art historians Carter Ratcliff and Linda Dalrymple Henderson, mathematician George Francis and art collector Norma Roth for their essay contributions to the exhibition catalog.

Founded in 1924, the Orlando Museum of Art is a 501(c)(3) educational institution whose mission reflects the continued growth of Florida, ardent community support for the arts and the OMA's role as a leading cultural institution in the region. Since its inception, the Museum's purpose has been to enrich the cultural life of Florida by providing excellence in the visual arts. To meet this objective, the Museum has dedicated itself to collecting, preserving and interpreting notable works of art; to presenting exhibitions of local, regional, national and international significance; to developing first-rate educational programs; and to presenting creative and inclusive programs to reach every segment of a diverse community. Our Editor Visits The Leopold Museum in Vienna, Austria ~ Home To The Rudolf & Elisabeth Leopold Collection

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:42 PM PDT

artwork: The Leopold Museum (on the far right) in the famous Museumsquartier of Vienna, Austria . . Over 11,500 m2 of display space at The Leopold. Housed in a striking modern building designed by Pritzker Prize winning architects Ortner & Ortner and opened in 2001

In 1994, with support from the National Bank of Austria, the Leopold Museum was founded by Professor Rudolf Leopold and the Republic of Austria. The first task of the foundation was to grant public access to the comprehensive collection (over 5,700 artworks from the Leopold's private collection) through the construction of a new 11,500 m2 modern museum. The result, the Leopold Museum, occupies a striking modern building designed by Pritzker Prize winning architects Ortner & Ortner, which opened in 2001. Located in Vienna's Museum Quarter, the building appears as a light-flooded cube of shell-white limestone. The building's interior only allows daylight to penetrate at specific points along the length of the rooms (with side light along the breadth) and only allows one-sixth of the exhibition area to be lit by daylight from above. A few very deliberately positioned picture windows create the kind of randomness found in "bourgeois" homes, consistent with the pictures having been painted for that certain stratum of society. The voluminous building could almost be said to house two museums, one above the other. The part of the building above ground level is entirely dedicated to the Leopold Collection, the three lower floors are mainly used for the graphics collection, temporary exhibitions, communication (the auditorium) and storage. Visitors enter at the high atrium level, and can either take the single-flight staircase to the right, or enter the Klimtsaal (Klimt gallery), the first large gallery on the left. The top of the main stairs overlooks another big gallery which is in fact accessed on a lower floor and is part of the temporary exhibition area. The staggered heights of these galleries create a mezzanine which houses the museum shop, which in turn leads up to the café above the entrance hall. The functional "confusion" of the spatial order in the entrance area is presumably not an artistic principle but a response to a simple need, one which has been translated into an instrument of spatial perception throughout the entire museum. It is on the next floor that the whole concept of the sequence of interlocking rooms becomes clear, both in terms of the simplicity of the arrangement and the variations in the repeated basic configuration. In Addition to featuring the works of the expressionist Egon Schiele, the Leopold Museum has also made a name for itself as the museum of Viennese Art Noveau. No other museum offers a comparable cross section of the exceptional achievements of this uniquely Viennese tradition. The finest examples of turn-of-the-century Viennese craftsmanship are combined with a presentation of painting, graphic art and sculpture, providing insight into this remarkable era. Designed by artists like Kolo Moser or Josef Hoffmann and produced by the Wiener Werkstätte, these objects bear witness to the timeless elegance of art in Vienna around 1900. artwork: Egon Schiele - "Reclining Woman" (1917) - Oil on canvas From the Leopold Museum's extensive collection of Egon Schiele artwork

Professor Rudolf Leopold (1925-2010) was born in Vienna, and obtained his doctoral degree in medicine in 1953. During his medical studies, he began to attend art history lectures and to collect paintings and objects of art at the same time, above all, works of the then little-respected Egon Schiele. He purchased his first painting ("The Hermits" by Egon Schiele) using the 30,000 Austrian Schillings that his mother had promised him for a car as a reward for completing of his medical studies. But Rudolf Leopold decided against the car and bought the Schiele, thus beginning his collecting career with a brilliant coup. Over the years, professor Leopold not only amassed a large and significant collection (extending to other significant Austrian artists), but became the foremost expert on Schiele, curating exhibitions of his work and publishing a critical catalogue of Schiele's works with a detailed list of his motifs. The museum owns 44 oil paintings and 180 gouaches and watercolours by Egon Schiele (the largest collection of Egons Schiele's art in the world), as well as other Austrian art of the 20th century, including key paintings and drawings by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl, Albin Egger-Lienz, and paintings and prints by Herbert Boeckl, Hans Böhler, Anton Faistauer, Anton Kolig, Alfred Kubin, and Wilhelm Thöny. The historical context is illustrated by major Austrian works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. The panoramic windows of the museum offer a unique view of the Vienna city centre, with Maria Theresien-Platz and the Imperial Palace.

Two exhibitions are currently on view at the Leopold Museum. "Cezanne – Picasso – Giacometti" (extended until 2 February 2011) provides an opportunity to see masterpieces from the Beyeler Foundation in Basel. The main interest of the Beyelers lay mainly in collecting "well-approved" works of art. The approval process entailed a private ambience that allowed the works to be viewed over a long period of time, under varying conditions. The main purpose was not to reflect a history of modern art but rather the deep relationship the couple had built to the work they had collected, the accent lying always on the singularity and permanence of each work. Key works by artists like Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Francis Bacon, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol stand out in an abundance of distinguished names. Over time, a series of work groups emerged, for which the Beyeler Foundation enjoys worldwide acclaim. These include groups of work by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Leger, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet. A second exhibition, "Florentina Pakosta" (until 18 April 2011) provides an overview of work to date by the contemporary Viennese artist Florentina Pakosta. Her work takes socially critical realism as its starting point. Beginning in the late 1950s, Florentina Pakosta used pencil drawings and India ink works to examine anonymous character types whom she met at inns, on the streets or in train stations. Parallel to this, she was also experimenting with a cubist formal language. Over the course of time, her psychology-focused portrayals of human beings were reduced to stereotypical characters which she sometimes alienated to the point of becoming caricatures, and which occasionally even ended up as monstrosities. In the 1970s, Pakosta began creating the monumental character heads which were to garner her widespread fame. Further themes in Florentina Pakosta's works from the 1980s are uniformity and control.
