The Jonathan LeVine Gallery Presents 'Van Arno: The Minstrel Cycle' Posted: 09 Apr 2011 11:00 PM PDT New York.- The Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce 'The Minstrel Cycle', new works by Van Arno in what will be the Los Angeles-based artist's first solo exhibition at the gallery and most ambitious show, to date. The opening reception will be held on Saturday 16th April 2011, and the exhibition will then run through May 14th 2011. 'The Minstrel Cycle' features a series of seven large multi-figure oil paintings on canvas, reflecting themes of race and music, which the artist has explored and developed over the past several years. For this exhibition, Arno draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including real and imagined historical events, the surprising true lives of entertainers, blues and hip-hop lyrics, multi-cultural folklore and Afro-Caribbean mysticism. The show title references minstrelsy, a controversial form of entertainment from the 1800s, in which performers in blackface lampooned African-American culture through comic-musical variety acts loaded with racial stereotypes. Since the word minstrel is so culturally charged in discussions of race-relations in the United States and in the historical roots of contemporary musical influences, the artist thought it would be a fitting title for his new body of work. There is a broad range of subjects for the paintings in this show, including Lucifer and the blind fates (three prophetic witches who share one eye, also known as the Graeae in Greek mythology) along with historical figures such as the famous entertainer, Josephine Baker. Throughout his work, Arno consistently pushes the human figure into extremes of posture to emphasize his Baroque sensibility and approach to create tension, contrast, form and shadow. In the artist's words: "I attempt to paint the archetypical moment of clarity and passion. Imagery must be made exciting and alive. Rules of lighting, anatomy, gravity and physics must be bent or broken to make the picture LOUD. That is the ultimate goal of my work." Born in 1963 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Van Arno was raised in St. Louis, Missouri where he attended a Christian Science school from Kindergarten through High school. Arno studied at Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, and by the early '90s, his illustration resume included skateboard deck designs for Powell Peralta, story-boarding for Robotech, box art for Bandai Games, as well as numerous clients in the music industry. When his focus shifted to fine art, Arno began to create figurative works featuring religious, folk, pop culture, and mythical heroes. His paintings have been exhibited across the country in galleries and institutions such as the Riverside Art Museum and Laguna Art Museum in California and the Hollywood Art and Culture Center in Florida. A book of the artist's collected works (2000-2008), entitled Volume: The Uber-Mannerist Work of Van Arno was published in 2009. visit the artists website at ... http://www.vanarno.com/ Jonathan LeVine Gallery exhibits a genre of work influenced by illustration, comic book art, graffiti, street art and pop culture imagery. Opus Art Presents Karl de Vroomen At The Gallery on Cork Street in London Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:59 PM PDT London.- Opus Art Presents 'Karl de Vroomen: This is the First Thing' At The Gallery on Cork Street in London from May 23rd to 28th 2011 (with a private viewing on Tuesday 24th May from 6 - 8pm). The internationally renowned Opus Art comes to London for an exhibition to showcase the work of highly regarded artist, Karl de Vroomen. This exhibition will showcase an exceptional body of new work relaying the thematics of Philip Larkin's 1940 poem, "This is the First Thing". Thematically, Larkin's poem deals exclusively with the destructive passage of time, a notion central to de Vroomen's work. For both Larkin and de Vroomen, time is a mighty and destructive force. It is shown by de Vroomen in his desolate landscapes, wilting sunflowers and animals suspended in a moment of time. The artist's paintings show a consideration of death and the cycles of nature, they are introspective explorations of man's search for 'meaning', his paintings endeavour to make sense of the strangeness and disquiet that pervades everyday life. De Vroomen is intrigued by the peripheral or marginal sites that exist between nature and culture, countryside and city. His paintings cleverly combine an investigation into the formal aspects of painting - drawing from the traditional practice of Romanticism, whilst responding to the poetry and desolation of these places or animals he depicts. De Vroomen has an established reputation in the art world. From exhibiting with Saatchi to being shortlisted for the Sainsbury's Scholarship in Painting and Sculpture at the British School of Rome. De Vroomen has shown his work in London, New York, Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne. De Vroomen was born in 1982 in London and lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated from Newcastle University in 2009 with an MA in Fine Art (with distinction), following the completion of a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton in 2006. Upon graduating de Vroomen was awarded the Hole Editions Postgraduate Print Award and in 2010 was awarded a residency at Newcastle University. Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis salutes Bruce Nauman ~ "Dead Shot Dan" Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:54 PM PDT ST. LOUIS, MO - The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis presents "Dead Shot Dan", an exhibition of works by the preeminent American artist Bruce Nauman. Bruce Nauman's work is often discussed in relationship to the writer Samuel Beckett, a playwright who evoked the painful drama of existence, and yet never left laughter too far behind. Nauman's comedy comes with a wry after-taste, and this selection of neons, drawings, prints, photographs, and videos make us laugh and cringe. While Nauman works with a wide range of themes, processes, and ideas, this exhibition underlines his particular use of humor—deadpan, painful, and relentlessly tongue-in-cheek. On view 23 January through 19 April, 2009. |

Michael Werner Gallery exhibits Paintings by Swiss Artist Félix Vallotton Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:43 PM PDT NEW YORK, NY.- Michael Werner Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Swiss artist Félix Vallotton (Lausanne, 1865 – Paris, 1925). The exhibition features portraits of women, primarily nudes, and is the first gallery exhibition in New York devoted to the artist's paintings. Félix Vallotton's paintings do not give pleasure easily. In portraiture he is not a flashy virtuoso and his nudes are not "sexy", at least not in any typical fashion. His paint handling is careful and deliberate; his palette, subdued and a little flat; his surfaces, slow and at times somewhat dry. His intense, unforgiving attention to detail lends a palpable realism to the paintings. Enlivened by a thinly veiled eroticism, his subtly voyeuristic scenes leave one feeling more than a little uncomfortable. Paintings of Félix Vallotton is on view from 4 February to 10 April 2010. |
Sculptural Installations by Francis Upritchard at Vienna's Secession Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:41 PM PDT VIENNA.- Francis Upritchard creates sculptural installations in which human figures, painted in bright colours, inhabit a world replete with found objects and everyday items, modified to meet their needs. The inhabitants and their objects are shown on specially produced or found pieces of furniture. Paying as much attention to the furniture, to its careful refurbishment as to the figures themselves, her work gives equal weight to art, craft, and display: the design and staging within the exhibition space is an integral part of the work. On view April 30 through June 20, 2010. |
