Produced through laborious processes of knotting, stitching, and weaving, the work in this exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the ways in which multi-sensory information can be sutured and layered to produce meaning about the worlds we inhabit. Each artist uses fibre — a three-dimensional, quotidian material — to produce and transmit individual and collective narratives that are at once coherent and fragmented, visible and invisible. Canadian Sculptor Evan Penny Opens at Kunsthalle Tübingen

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 08:45 PM PDT

artwork: South African born artist Evan Penny stands next to one of his works at an exhibition preview in Tuebingen, Germany. The exhibition at the Kunsthalle has assembled 40 of Penny's works from 02 June to 04 September.

TUEBINGEN, GERMANY - Evan Penny's sculptures portray human bodies in their true colors and down to the last hair, with all of their wrinkles and characteristic features. His figures, to which he skillfully applies layers of silicone and pigments and implants with real hair, have an extremely sensuous presence. And yet their artificiality is obvious. Alienation techniques such as compressions, stretching, distortions, or color errors cause them to be reminiscent of features of photography, television, or digital image editing. What evolves are anamorphic sculptures that grow out of two-dimensionality, three-dimensional portraits that come across as being flawed process-color prints, or even distorted sculptures that advance into the fourth dimension of time. On exhibition through 4 September.

artwork: Robert Gwathmey - "The Chauffeur", circa 1938 - Oil on canvas - 24 ¼" x 30". Collection: Westmoreland Museum of American Art, on view in "They Practice What They Teach: Artist Faculty of Carnegie Institute of Technology" until September 4th.

Greensburg, PA.- The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is pleased to present "They Practice What They Teach: Artist Faculty of Carnegie Institute of Technology", on view at the museum until September 4th. Featuring a number of artists who taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, this exhibition brings together a number of diverse artists, whose only link was their dedication to teaching the next generation of artists at the Institute.

Edmund Ashe, Clarence Carter, Esther Topp Edmonds, Balcomb Greene, Robert Gwathmey, Roy Hilton, Alexander Kostellow, Robert Lepper, Norwood MacGilvary, Wilfred Readio, Samuel Rosenberg, Raymond Simboli, Russell Twiggs and Everett Warner were among the artists who dedicated a portion of their artistic careers to teaching in the College of Fine Art at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). Organized by The Westmoreland, this exhibition of 60 objects highlights the work of these artists while giving insight into their influence as teachers on the next generation of prominent artists in Pittsburgh.

The mission of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is to enrich a growing public through innovative and collaborative approaches to the collection, preservation and presentation of American art. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art was established in 1949 at the bequest of Mary Marchand Woods, a long time resident of Greensburg interested in the arts. This visionary founder bequeathed her entire estate in order for the Museum facility to be built in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, 35 miles east of Pittsburgh. In 1959, the Museum opened its doors to the public, and its focus became the collection and exhibition of American and southwestern Pennsylvania art.

artwork: Samuel Rosenberg - "Bread No. 1", circa 1942 - Oil tempera on masonite - 20" x 24". Collection: Westmoreland Museum of American Art, on view until September 4th.

Over the past fifty years, the Museum has assembled a collection of works by significant American artists, concentrating on the mid-18th through the mid-20th centuries, including works by Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and Winslow Homer among other preeminent American artists. The Museum has also become known as the repository for works by southwestern Pennsylvania artists, including artists of the Scalp Level School, holding many exhibitions and publishing several books on the subject since 1981. This interest caught the attention of noted art historian William Gerdts who observed in his encyclopedic 1998 book, Art Across America, that the Museum "pioneered regional investigations."

In 1993, after making great strides in developing a significant collection, the Museum adopted a long-range plan to address the visitors' experience and asserted itself as a vital, forward-thinking institution, engaged with its community. This led to a capital campaign, launched in 1997, which provided for a much-needed Museum renovation. The Museum reopened in 1999 with six improved galleries, improved educational facilities and visitors' amenities, and a larger endowment for the future. The Museum has organized many important exhibitions over the years, including 'All That is Glorious Around Us: Paintings from the Hudson River School' in 1997, and 'American Scenery: Different Views in Hudson River School Painting' in 2006, both of which allowed the public to see works from one of the most comprehensive private collections of this genre; and both shows traveled extensively throughout the United States: Spirit of a Community: The Photographs of Charles "Teenie" Harris in 2001, which brought the street photography of this important African American photographer to the public as fine art prints for the first time and gained national media attention; and in 2007, Made in Pennsylvania: A Folk Art Tradition, an exhibition that brought together for the first time almost 400 significant examples of folk art, drew 22% of its attendance from outside the state and had a $700,000 economic impact on the southwestern Pennsylvania region. In addition, Born of Fire: The Valley of Work, an exhibition focusing on the art, music and history of Pittsburgh's Big Steel Era, debuted at The Westmoreland in June 2006 before making its European debut in Oberhausen, Germany in February 2007. Born of Fire is scheduled to tour Europe through 2010.

artwork: Robert Lepper - "Study for the mural at the Mineral Industries Building, West Virginia University", circa 1940 Tempera on masonite - 24" x 92 ½". - Collection: Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

The Westmoreland is known for its many award-winning, curriculum-based educational programs, which have reached thousands of students in the region and have received both state and federal funding. The innovative programs utilize the Museum's collection to teach students in grades Kindergarten through high school about art and history. The Museum is a recognized leader in the social enterprise movement in southwestern Pennsylvania. Through our retail and product development initiatives and traveling exhibitions, annual unrestricted earned income has increased six fold, thereby significantly increasing our self-sustainability. The Westmoreland's Fiftieth Anniversary in 2009 was an opportunity for the entire community to both celebrate the Museum's accomplishments and to help plan for its future. Intensive community planning sessions have set the stage for the Museum's next fifty years, including an expansion of the building to accommodate more galleries, educational facilities and public gathering places as well as securing the resources needed to continue to serve the community well into the future. The Uffizi Gallery In Florence ~ The Finest Collection Of Renaissance Art In The World

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 07:51 PM PDT

artwork: The Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Originally commissioned by Cosimo I, Duke of Florence and the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, it was designed by Giorgio Vasari in the middle of the 16th century. The gallery was officially opened to the public in 1765. Almost 2 million visitors every year enjoy its impressive collection of Renaissance art.

The Uffizi Palace is one of the most loved monuments in Florence and contains the world's leading collection of renaissance art. Originally commissioned by Cosimo I, Duke of Florence and the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Uffizi was designed by Giorgio Vasari in the middle of the 16th century. The intention of Cosimo I was to build a palace that could host the thirteen administrative and judicial Magistrature or Uffizi, from which the palace would take its name. Vasari was also responsible for the building, five years later, of an overhead corridor passing above Ponte Vecchio and the Church of Santa Felicità, to link the Uffizi to the Pitti Palace, the new residence of the Medici family, and which provides stunning views of the palace courtyard and Arno river. The building has an unusual and singular horseshoe shape, which opens towards the Arno River. The two floors of the building, rise above a pillared portico that runs along the whole length of the palace. The portico niches contain statues of Florentine dignitaries and artists from the middle Ages to the 19th century. It was Francesco I de' Medici, Cosimo I's son, who first created an art Gallery on the second floor of the Palazzo degli Uffizi to entertain himself, during his walks, with the collection of paintings, sculptures and arrases belonging to the Medici family. The key point in the history of the Uffizi came in 1737, when the last Medici heiress, Anna Maria Luisa moved to France and signed an agreement that all the Medici artworks were not to be removed from Florence. The gallery had been open to visitors by request since the sixteenth century, and in 1765 it was officially opened to the public. Over the years, the Uffizi has survived wartime bombing, flooding in 1966 and 2007 and a terrorist car bombing (attributed to the Sicilian Mafia) in 1993 which damaged some frescoes in the Niobe room beyond repair. In addition to its galleries, the Uffizi contains teaching facilities, an art restoration laboratory, photographic studio and research center. Rennovations are currently under way on parts of the building, under the "New Uffizi" project. When completed these will increase the gallery space, allow more of the collection to be put on public display and reduce the overcrowding caused by almost 2 million visitors every year.
