Gagosian Gallery Rome Presents "Made in Italy" ~ A Group Show Posted: 05 Jun 2011 10:11 PM PDT Rome.- The Gagosian Gallery in Rome is pleased to present "Made in Italy", a group show celebrating the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification. The exhibition maps an unexpected Italian journey through works by seminal artists of the past sixty years: Georg Baselitz, Jean Michel Basquiat, Joseph Beuys, Dike Blair, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Louise Lawler, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, Cindy Sherman, David Smith, Thomas Struth, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and Lawrence Weiner. "Made in Italy" will be on view until July 29th. The irresistible appeal of Italy for international artists is deeply rooted in history. In the tradition of the Grand Tour of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, British, American, French and German travelers crossed the Alps to witness what they had previously only experienced in books; the wonders of the classical tradition, the masterpieces of an idealized past, as well as the thrill that the distinct Italian lifestyle and customs kindled. Immersing themselves in the marvels of the past and the harmonious disarray of the present, artists from near and far negotiated the trials and tribulations of early tourism. From Venice's Byzantine exoticism, the cerebral sensuality of the Florentine Renaissance, and the beguiling vestiges of classical Rome, Italy became an inspiring artistic idea and ideal. This infatuation continued into the twentieth century, during which tourism became easier and accessible to many. The animated cities or pastoral idylls of Italy remain a rite of passage in the careers of many contemporary artists. Three hundred years from the inception of this tradition, the Italian experience – from its unrivaled art-historical wealth to the kaleidoscopic quality of daily life – has remained of vital relevance to modern and contemporary artistic production. The oeuvres of Leonardo da Vinci, Giorgio De Chirico, and Caravaggio have been interpreted by Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, and Cindy Sherman while archeology has fuelled the imaginations of Roy Lichtenstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat; the totality of modern landscapes have been interpreted by Gerhard Richter and Andreas Gursky; Alberto Giacometti and Jeff Koons have treated the female canon while Joseph Beuys, Mike Kelley, and Richard Serra have been inspired by key cultural figures or episodes of the contemporary period. 'Italy, or rather, the many civilizations which emerged over the centuries in the cities and territories that we have come to call Italy, constitutes a unique example of historical and artistic cohesion', explains Mario Codognato, curator of the exhibition. 'This particularity has made it a point of reference, and of both attraction and conflict, for visual artists in the Western world. Italy is past and present; archeology and contemporary creativity. Its two distinct identities conflate the weight of tradition with the contradictions of modernity.' With key works by some of the greatest modern and contemporary artists, Made in Italy will reconstruct the personal and creative journeys that brought them at specific moments in their careers into direct confrontation with this universal legacy called Italy. The Gagosian Gallery in Rome was Gagosian's first in Europe outside London. The gallery is located in a former bank, originally built in 1921, on Via Francesco Crispi, near the Spanish steps, the main gallery is a stunning oval room, 23 metres by 13 meters and with 6 meter ceilings. Tall windows on one side bring natural light into the space. The curved wall is sufficiently shallow in its radius to accommodate painting shows. With 8 galleries around the world, the Gagosian Gallery worked with ,and organized exhibitions by, the most important artists in the world, both contemporary and historical. Artists shown or represented include, Jean Michel Basquiat, Alighiero e Boetti, Cecily Brown, Francesco Clemente, Walter De Maria, Alberto Giacometti, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst, Willem de Kooning, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Mario Merz, Pino Pascali, Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, Jenny Saville, Richard Serra, David Smith, Philip Taaffe, Robert Therrien, Piotr Uklanski, Francesco Vezzoli, Andy Warhol, Christopher Wool are just few names of the long list. The V&A Museum in London Presents "The Cult of Beauty" Posted: 05 Jun 2011 07:47 PM PDT LONDON - The exhibition is arranged in four main chronological sections, charting the development of the Aesthetic Movement in art and design through the decades from the 1860s to the 1890s. As well as paintings, prints and drawings, the show will include examples of all the 'artistic' decorative arts, together with drawings, designs and photographs, as well as portraits, fashionable dress and jewellery of the era. Literary life will be represented by some of the most beautiful books of the day, whilst a number of set-pieces reveal the visual world of the Aesthetes, evoking the kind of rooms and ensembles of exquisite objects through which they expressed their sensibilities. On view through 17 July at the V&A Museum. The search for new beauty 1860s In the 1860s the new and exciting 'Cult of Beauty' united, for a while at least, romantic bohemians such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti (and his younger Pre-Raphaelite followers William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones), maverick figures such as James McNeill Whistler, then fresh from Paris and full of 'dangerous' French ideas about modern painting, and the 'Olympians' - the painters of grand classical subjects who belonged to the circle of Frederic Leighton and G.F.Watts. Choosing unconventional models, such as Rossetti's muse Lizzie Siddal or Leighton's sultry favourite 'La Nanna', these painters created entirely new types of female beauty. Rossetti and his friends were also the first to attempt to realise their imaginative world in the creation of 'artistic' furniture and the decoration of rooms. In this period, artists' houses and their extravagant lifestyles became the object of public fascination and sparked a revolution in the architecture and interior decoration of houses that led to a widespread recognition of the need for beauty in everyday life. Art for Arts Sake. .1860s-1870s One of the most important examples of the mutual influence between artists and designers is to be found in the startling collaborations between James McNeill Whistler and the architect E.W.Godwin who designed the painter's studio, The White House, and created some of the most innovative furniture of the day. Characterized equally by elegance and eccentricity, Whistler and Godwin's work drew upon influences as diverse as ancient Greek art and the Japanese prints and other artifacts just beginning to arrive in Europe. In the 1870s, the leading Aesthetic artists, Whistler, Leighton, Watts, Albert Moore and Burne-Jones evolved a new kind of self-consciously exquisite painting in which mood, colour harmony and beauty of form were all, and subject played little or no part. The opening of the Grosvenor Gallery (with its famous 'greenery-yallery' walls) in 1877 at last gave the Aesthetic painters a fashionable and glamorous showcase for their much-discussed art. But the decade closed with intense controversy exemplified by the critic John Ruskin's savage attack on Whistler, which prompted the painter's spirited defense of the ideals of 'Art for Art's Sake' in his writings and by the staging of his own exhibitions. Late-flowering beauty..1880s-1890s Oscar Wilde, the first celebrity style-guru, invented a brilliant pose of 'poetic intensity', but initially made his name promoting the idea of 'The House Beautiful'. By the 1880s Britain was in the grip of the 'greenery-yallery' Aesthetic Craze, lovingly satirized by Gilbert and Sullivan in their famous comic opera Patience and by the caricaturist George Du Maurier in the pages of Punch. In the last decade of Queen Victoria's reign the Aesthetic Movement entered its final, fascinating Decadent phase, characterized by the extraordinary black-and-white drawings of Aubrey Beardsley in The Yellow Book. The exhibition ends with a superb group of the greatest late Aesthetic paintings, including masterpieces such as Leighton's Bath of Psyche, Moore's Midsummer and Rossetti's final picture The Daydream, shown alongside the sensuous nude figures sculpted in bronze and precious materials by Alfred Gilbert and other brilliant younger exponents of 'The New Sculpture'. Karen Bystedt's Photograph Art of Hollywood Stars Before they Were Legend Posted: 05 Jun 2011 07:16 PM PDT LOS ANGELES, CA.- Long before Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, Keneau Reeves to name but a few of the "A" list stars had landed in the red carpet circle of fame they were struggling actors with little but a dream. While these young stars were in pursuit of careers on the big screen, a visionary blond photographer artist by the name of Karen Bystedt arrived in Hollywood fresh out of New York Film School. Bystedt was in search of her niche. Unlike the famed George Hurrell of the 1930's who photographed stars like Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo and Clark Gable after they became Hollywood legend, Bystedt set a course to find those actors who had special qualities and dynamics to become Hollywood legend. Her early journey was a road more like Norman Seeff and her iconic photos of the same caliber. Like Seeff, Bystedt's photography sessions with emerging stars were emotionally engaging experiences that resulted in many iconic images. |
