TEFAF Maastricht to Celebrate Its 25th Anniversary in 2012 Posted: 07 Aug 2011 11:00 PM PDT MAASTRICHT.- The Fair is often referred to as a museum in which everything is for sale. The breadth and quality of objects are admired throughout the world. In 2011 TEFAF attracted visitors from over 181 museums from 20 countries. Principal sponsor AXA Art brought more than 2,000 collectors to TEFAF this year. At Maastricht-Aachen airport 154 private aircrafts landed during the course of the Fair. Next year TEFAF celebrates its 25th anniversary from 16-25 March 2012. The Mayor of Maastricht, Onno Hoes, said, "The City of Maastricht and TEFAF are inseparable and are of great mutual benefit. I very much look forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Fair next year and the City looks forward to working with the Fair over the next quarter century" TEFAF is widely acknowledged as the world's most influential art Fair. The Fair closed on Sunday 27th March. The focus during the Fair is on the extraordinary works of art that leading specialists from around the world exhibit at the Fair but its impact on the local economy stretches far beyond the confines of the Fair. The Mayor of Maastricht, Onno Hoes, said, "The City of Maastricht and TEFAF are inseparable and are of great mutual benefit. I very much look forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Fair next year and the City looks forward to working with the Fair over the next quarter century". Maastricht-Aachen airport commented that TEFAF is always their busiest period of the year. 154 private aircrafts landed at the airport during the course of the Fair and one of the runways had to be converted into a parking area to accommodate the large number of private aircraft landing at the Fair. TEFAF is often referred to as a museum in which everything is for sale. The breadth and quality of objects are admired throughout the world. This year TEFAF attracted visitors from over 181 museums from 20 countries. Each year visitors marvel at the extraordinary presentation of the Fair. Creating such an elegant environment is a major logistical operation involving hundreds of people. "The European Fine Art fair has once again proved to be unrivalled. We have brought more than 2,000 collectors to TEFAF this year, of which over 1,000 have participated in our guided tours around the Fair", Cornelia Zinken of AXA Art, TEFAF's principal sponsor. The Fair occupies an area of 31,000m² and takes 25 days to build. The construction materials take up 12,000m³ and are transported on 200 trailers. Over 200 men and women work round the clock to build the Fair in the given time frame. Flowers are a signature feature of TEFAF Maastricht. This year's design required 22,500 carnations, 18,000 tulips, 7,500 anemones and ranunculus as well as 250 branches of magnolia. These are changed twice during the course of the Fair by 16 florists. In 2011 a total of 144,000 flowers were used throughout the Fair. From 18-27 March 2011, TEFAF was home to 260 specialists from 16 different countries. Between them they exhibited more than 30,000 works of art, antiques and design from different civilizations stretching from the dawn of time to the present day with an aggregate value of in excess of 2 billion euros. TEFAF Antiques is the largest section of the Fair with 97 exhibitors. This is followed by TEFAF Paintings with 64 and TEFAF Modern with 46. Of TEFAF Maastricht, Michel Bismut a leading interior designer from Paris said, "TEFAF Maastricht is an inspiration. It is wonderful to spend time in each section of the Fair and see the juxtaposition of so many extraordinary objects. Without doubt, the experience helps me advise my clients". Before the fair opens to the public each work of art is examined for quality, authenticity and condition by 168 international experts in 29 vetting committees. The vetting process takes a total of 2,184 man hours. Anthony Speelman, Chairman of the Paintings Vetting Committees commented, "This year exhibitors had clearly saved their best paintings for the Fair, the quality was consistently high and the vetting process was very smooth". During the course of the Fair TEFAF welcomed 73,574 visitors from 55 countries around the world, more than 10,000 of whom attended the Fair on the Preview day. Refreshments were served throughout the preview, which lasted nine hours. 100 cooks prepared more than 150,000 canapés, which were served by 400 waiting staff. 100,000 glasses were used to serve drinks from 1,800 bottles of champagne, 3,500 bottles of wine as well as beer and soft drinks. Commenting on the attendance at the Fair, Ben Janssens, Chairman of TEFAF said, "I am delighted to have seen such an increase in visitors from mainland China and I find it particularly remarkable that they have made acquisitions in many different areas and not only Chinese art". Next year the European Fine Art Fair celebrates its 25th anniversary from 16-25 March 2012. |

Georgia Museum of Art to host Everett Gee Jackson Retrospective Posted: 07 Aug 2011 09:11 PM PDT ATHENS, GA - Everett Gee Jackson/San Diego Modern, 1920–1955 will be on display from July 19 to September 28, 2008, at the Georgia Museum of Art. Organized by the San Diego Museum of Art, this traveling exhibition recognizes and commends the work of noted artist, educator and illustrator Everett Gee Jackson and serves as a re-introduction to modernism in American art. This major retrospective features more than 50 images that span Jackson's most significant and productive years as an artist. "The Georgia Museum of Art is interested in the connections among artists, and there are parallels between the works by Everett Gee Jackson and those by artists such as Jean Charlot in our collection. Jackson uses social realism and shows the artistic interest in everyday subject matter," said Paul Manoguerra, curator of American art at the Georgia Museum of Art. Born in 1900 in Mexia, Texas, Jackson showed strong interest in the Southwest early in his career through his use of earth tones and color choices. As one of the first American artists to visit Mexico after its social and cultural revolution, Jackson was heavily influenced by Mexican painters Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. His stylized form and Mexican motifs form the basis of his modernist style. A gifted artist and popular teacher, Jackson's legacy in San Diego parallels the long-lasting impact of Lamar Dodd in Georgia. As a young man in his twenties, Jackson was one of the first Americans to visit Mexico after the country's prolonged social and cultural revolution. While there, he became influenced by artists such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, as well as the Mexican Mural movement. As a result, stylized forms and Mexican motifs became dominant in Jackson's work, and his new artistic inclination towards realism began to form the basis of his modernist style. A gifted artist and popular teacher, Jackson's legacy in San Diego was pervasive in his own day and has had long-lasting impact. As one of the founding artists of the Contemporary Artists of San Diego, the region's first professional artists' organization, created in 1929, he staked out a course for vanguard art making in the region. Jackson also taught renowned conceptual artist John Baldessari and founded SDMA's Latin American Arts Committee. This major retrospective organized by SDMA presents the work of Everett Gee Jackson, San Diego's most important Modernist artist. This exhibition is generously sponsored by YellowBook USA, the Fort Foundation Trustee Fund of the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, the W. Newton Morris Charitable Foundation and the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art. Bauhaus Archiv opens Amerika 1928 ~ Photos of a Study Trip by Walter Gropius Posted: 07 Aug 2011 09:05 PM PDT BERLIN.- "Gropius praises efficiency here" runs the headline in the New York Times on May 27, 1928. The article relates that the architect Walter Gropius had been in America for several weeks to study the more efficient and timesaving methods of mass production. In the spring of 1928, Walter Gropius had resigned his post as director of the Bauhaus Dessau and, together with his wife Ise, embarked on a much longed-for study trip through the USA. There he would deal primarily with modern building techniques, particularly the steel-frame construction of New York skyscrapers. The trip is financed by Adolf Sommerfeld, the building contractor and longtime patron of the Bauhaus, with whom Gropius plans to carry out large building projects in Berlin that will make use of the state-of-the-art technology. |
Guggenheim Foundation and YouTube Seek Budding Video Artists Posted: 07 Aug 2011 09:04 PM PDT New York, New York - For artists, being included in a museum exhibition generally means first having to penetrate the well-guarded gates of a prestigious art gallery. But now the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and YouTube are aiming to short-circuit that exclusionary art-world system, at least briefly, in much the same way that other hierarchical systems have been blown apart in the Internet age. Beginning Monday anyone with access to a video camera and a computer will have an opportunity to catch the eye of a Guggenheim curator and vie for a place in a video-art exhibition in October at all of the foundation's museums: the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York, the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. |

Warhol / Icon: The Creation of Image on View at The Byzantine & Christian Museum Posted: 07 Aug 2011 09:02 PM PDT ATHENS.- The Byzantine & Christian Museum, Athens, presents the ground-breaking exhibition, Warhol/Icon: The Creation of Image. The exhibition brings together key portraits by Andy Warhol from across the entire range of his career, providing a telling critique of the modern obsession with fame, a concept which fascinated Warhol and which stands at the centre of his work. Common to the historic and modern concepts of an icon, the idea of worship is a central link. Warhol's work endorses, dissects – and employs – those processes by which a real person's identity becomes progressively obscured by their glamorized, iconic representation in the mass-media. |
