CHICHESTER, UK - Pallant House Gallery is presenting 'Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera: Masterpieces from the Gelman Collection'. This major touring exhibition, which is in Chichester for its only UK showing, brings together the iconic paintings of Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) and Diego Rivera (1886 – 1957), the two central figures of Mexican Modernism, for the first time in this country. Few artists have captured the public's imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera. The myths that surrounded them in their lifetime arose not only from their significant body of work, but also from their active participation in the life of their time, their friendships (and conflicts) with leading figures, their striking physical appearance and spirited natures.

artwork: Frida Kahlo - "The Love Embrace of the Universe", 1949 - Oil on canvas. - Courtesy of Pallant House Gallery, UKTheir work speaks of a fierce loyalty to and pride in Mexico, the ideals of the 1910 revolution and a commitment to the conditions of the common man. Rivera is a socialist hero, famous for his large scale political murals depicting workers and class struggle. Kahlo is a feminist icon, whose self portraits present a challenging view of the female role and address emotional issues of love, pain and heartbreak. On exhibition through October 9th.

The exhibition includes key images by Kahlo such as Self Portrait with Monkeys, and Self Portrait as a Tehuana or Diego in My Thoughts, and the major work by Rivera, Calla Lily Vendors (all 1943). The paintings are supplemented by a display of the rarely-seen photographs by Frida Kahlo' s father Guillermo Kahlo (1872-1941) depicting churches and cloisters around Mexico City and Tepotzlan, alongside views from the Palace in Chapultepec Park. Their inclusion allows, for the first time in this country, the work of Frida Kahlo to be placed alongside and put into context with the two most important men in her life.

The exhibition is further extended with a selection of photographs by another key artistic couple who offer a significant glimpse of Mexico's cultural history, the photographers Manuel Álvarez Bravo (1902-2002) and Lola Álvarez Bravo (1905-1993). Manuel famously photographed the Mexican Muralists, and his cinematic images of Mexico speak of the mystery of everyday life and contemporary political and social problems. Lola began taking photographs under the influence of her husband in the 1920s and worked in a number of photographic genres such as nudes, still life, landscape, photomontage and portraits. She was a close friend of Frida Kahlo, and hosted Frida's first solo exhibition in Mexico in her gallery (Galería de Arte Mexicano) in 1953.

Behind the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection, widely regarded as the world's most significant private holding of 20th-century Mexican art, lies the story of two art enthusiasts who saw their acquisitions as a vital way to connect with their adopted culture in Mexico.

The Gelman Collection now stands testament to the artistic developments in Mexico throughout the past century, but the country was once foreign to Jacques and Natasha, who were both from Eastern Europe. Jacques Gelman, who was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1909, grew fond of cinema during his youth, going on to later start film distribution companies in France and Mexico. In the late 1930s, he met Natasha Zahalka, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia, while she was traveling in Mexico City. The couple married in 1941, during the height of the World War II. The Gelmans were both Jewish and the war prevented them from returning to the Old World, leading them to instead become Mexican citizens and settle in Mexico City.

Soon after, Jacques found considerable wealth in producing movies starring the popular comic, Mario Moreno, also known as "Cantinflas" Jacques' success in the film industry enabled the Gelmans to start accruing a remarkable collection of both European and Mexican modern art at a time when there were very few collectors in Mexico.

Reflecting the Gelmans' personal tastes, their collection of Mexican art includes many portraits of themselves, such as Rufino Tamayo's Portrait of Mrs. Natasha Gelman (1948) and Ángel Zárraga's Portrait of Mr. Jacques Gelman (1945). The collection also includes self-portraits of artists whom the Gelmans knew personally, including Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Monkeys (1943).

Throughout the post-World War II artistic boom in Mexico, the Gelmans befriended a long list of renowned artists, including Kahlo, Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Consequently, their collection of Mexican works reveals not only their passion for art, but also their blossoming relationships with such artists.

The exhibition comes to Chichester for its only UK showing following the Pera Museum, Istanbul, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

Pallant House Gallery boasts one of the best collections of Modern British art in the UK. donated over the past thirty years, the collections tell the story of a number of individuals, all passionate collectors of art who generously donated their lifetimes' labours to the Gallery for the benefit of the public. A new wing was opened in June 2006, designed by Sir Colin Wilson and Long & Kentish. The £8.6 million project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, the local council, and other donors. The unashamedly modern block, which stands next to and integrates with the original Queen Anne building, won the 2007 Gulbenkian Prize. Visit :  www.pallant.org.uk/

Constable's first short stay in Salisbury was in 1811, and he came to the city seven times. His visits to this area, and his friendship with Archdeacon John Fisher, were of great significance to him.

Dublin Contemporary Attracts International and Irish Artists to Ireland's Historic Capital

Dublin, Ireland - One of the most ambitious art exhibitions ever staged in Ireland, Dublin Contemporary is presenting work by over 90 international and Irish artists at multiple locations in the dynamic, historic capital of Dublin. Dublin Contemporary is on view from September 6th through October 31st. In response to the theme "Terrible Beauty—Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance," the carefully selected presentation of work aims to investigate and reflect on emerging developments in contemporary art. Presenting politically and socially motivated works from local, national and international figures, new and recent works will be exhibited from artists including Willie Doherty, Dexter Dalwood, Jim Lambie, Thomas Hirschhorn and Teresa Margolles.

The main exhibition hub at Earlsfort Terrace, former home of University College Dublin, will provide a range of unusual spaces for mini solo exhibitions that range from large-scale installations to smaller intimate hangings. Representing a whole spectrum of artistic practices and approaches, the exhibition will showcase a multitude of new commissions alongside seminal existing works from recent years. Emerging artists will be shown alongside established figures, creating a dialogue between the past and present of contemporary art, which will be fleshed out further in the architectural treatment of the show spaces. Much of the original character of these spaces, as well as the traces of their past use, will be retained, enmeshing both the history of the building and its current use, while providing a platform for artists and audience to engage with this ambitious exhibition. Some of the many highlights at Earlsfort Terrace include the following: a titanic sculpture by Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn, an installation by eminent Greek artist Jannis Kounellis, a series of powerful photographs portraying a wounded Iraq war veteran by American Nina Berman, entitled 'Marine Wedding', new video works by Israeli artist Omer Fast and Irish artist Niamh O'Malley, as well as a major interactive multimedia sculpture by the Chinese artist Wang Du.

artwork: Lisa Yuskavage - "PieFace", 2008 Oil on linen - 121.9 x 102.2 cm. Courtesy the artist , David Zwirner, NY At the Royal Hibernian Academy. The Italian painter Alberto Di Fabio, known for his interweaving of biological and cosmological imagery, will present a number of new works, as will Irish painters Mairead O'hEocha and Brian Maguire. Also on exhibit will be an extraordinary large-scale sculpture of a giant squid by German artist David Zink Yi and a striking piece by Bulgarian Nedko Solakov. Emerging artists, including Ella Burke (Ireland), Ludovica Carbotta (Italy), James Deutsher (Australia) and Miks Mitrevics (Latvia), will all present new work side by side with commissions by leading figures such as mounir fatmi (Morocco), Jorge Tacla (Chile) and  Corban Walker (Ireland). Collaborative practices from Ireland and abroad are also well represented in this exhibition. They include, among others, the artist collectives The Bruce High Quality Foundation (USA), Claire Fontaine (France), Goldiechiari (Italy), Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (Ireland), and Superflex (Denmark). Performance pieces include, among other works, new commissions by the artists Amanda Coogan (Ireland) and Teresa Margolles (Mexico). The Office of Non-Compliance, located within the Earlsfort Terrace exhibition site, will function as a promoter of ideas around a laundry list of non-conformist art proposals. The Office's practice will be fuelled by the idea that not only has the world been transformed in the last few decades, the very concept of change itself has changed utterly. This element of the exhibition looks to highlight less conventional, largely artist-led models of art discourse, production and presentation. The Office of Non-Compliance will include ad-hoc, accessible structures for discourse around art and its place in society, such as a Bank of Problems, a Bank of Possibilities, One Problem a Week and a curated forum exploring one topical problem per week.

There are two further intriguing spaces within the Earlsfort Terrace complex: the serene Iveagh Gardens and the light-filled Annex, both adjacent to the main exhibition site. The former will function as an outdoor sculpture garden, while the latter will bring together a multiplicity of sound works under the title All Together Now. Extending its reach across the city, Dublin Contemporary 2011 will partner with four important Dublin galleries:  The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, The National Gallery of Ireland and The Royal Hibernian Academy.  Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane will present a retrospective of the work of renowned Irish artist Willie Doherty. Doherty represented Northern Ireland at the 2007 Venice Biennale and his work has been seen at leading institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and the Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. An exhibition of American painter Alice Neel's striking, psychologically penetrating portraits will take place at The Douglas Hyde Gallery.

artwork: Alberto Di Fabio - "Paesaggi della mente", 2011 - Acrylic on canvas - 200 x 350 cm. - Courtesy of Galleria Umberto Di Marino,Napoli, Italy and Gagosian Gallery, NY. - On view at the National Gallery of Ireland

The National Gallery of Ireland will host works by a number of international artists as well as a new commission by the distinguished Irish artist Brian O'Doherty. O'Doherty is renowned for his conceptual and installation art along with his highly influential writings on art and its attendant ideologies. A major retrospective of his work was held at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane in 2006. The Royal Hibernian Academy will host an exhibition of works by American painter Lisa Yuskavage as well as a new commission by Irish artist James Coleman. Yuskavage is highly regarded for her acerbic wit and novel and unsettling treatment of the female form. Major solo exhibitions have included The Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, and the Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva. James Coleman's celebrated installation and video work is known for its highly perceptive analysis of social interactions. Solo exhibitions have included a recent trio of shows at The Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Project Arts Centre and the Royal Hibernian Academy, as well as exhibitions at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona and the Dia Art Foundation, New York.

Throughout this eight-week event, visitors and Dubliners alike will experience an engaging programme of artworks in the public realm. These will include works by artists Alexandre Arrechea (Cuba), Tania Bruguera (Cuba), and Graham Dolphin (United Kingdom). Innovations in contemporary visual art made on the street will also be celebrated through works by artist Mark Jenkins (United States) and others. Dublin Contemporary facilities will include family area, café, shop and connectivity areas for media and public. These areas will be open to the general public through-out the event. Funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dublin Contemporary aims to position Dublin prominently as an international centre in the field of visual art. As a platform for collaborations with the global arts community, Dublin Contemporary will provide new opportunities for Irish visual artists and arts businesses, and will be a significant opportunity to cultivate deeper public engagement with the arts. It will complement the achievements of other areas of the arts and cultural scene, collectively enhancing Dublin's international image as a vibrant city to live, work, play. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art ~ Denmark's Most Visited Art Museum ~ Greets Our Editor

Posted: 28 Aug 2011 07:49 PM PDT

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is an international private museum with a considerable collection of superior modern art. It is the most visited art museum in Denmark. The name of the museum derives from the first owner of the property, Alexander Brun, who named the villa after his three wives, all named Louise. Situated 45 minutes outside Copenhagen, the museum opened in 1958. It was founded by Knud W. Jensen, who wanted to create a museum where Danes could see modern art, which until then had no special place in the Danish museums and show the interaction between visual art, architecture and the landscape. From the mid-60s on, Louisiana changed its approach from being a predominantly Danish museum to a museum with a renowned international collection. Its permanent collection includes more than 3700 works and is one of the largest in Scandinavia. It starts in the period after 1945 with artists like Picasso, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Yves Klein, Rauschenberg, Henry Moore, Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, Morris Louis, Jorn, Baselitz, Polke, Kiefer, and Per Kirkeby. Every year Louisiana offers 4-6 temporary exhibitions, presenting both great modernist artists and the latest international contemporary art. Throughout the years the museum has persisted in taking the international view as a premise for its exhibitions and Louisiana's status implies that the museum is able to attract future exhibitions and artists of a high standard available to only very few Scandinavian museums. Louisiana has become well known and recognized for what Knud W. Jensen called the sauna principle. He divided the exhibitions into 'hot' and 'cold' – the hot ones featured the artists that people knew and could recognize, the cold ones those they had never heard of, the 'difficult', often contemporary artists. The trick was to link the two so that people would be attracted to the city of Humlebæk by the popular exhibitions. It has never been Louisiana's goal to represent the whole chronological line through the art of the epoch. Louisiana's collection is characterized by concentrating on more compact groups of works and artists into which they offer the viewer deeper insights. This is especially true of artists like Giacometti and Asger Jorn, who are both represented by several very fine works – and it is also true of a number of artistic periods: European Nouveau Réalisme with Yves Klein, American Pop Art with Warhol and Lichtenstein, German art of the 1980s with Kiefer and Baselitz, as well as video art from the 1990s until today with important installations by, among others, Bill Viola and Gary Hill. Louisiana also displays a collection of Pre-Columbian art. Consisting of more than 400 objects, the collection was a donation from the Wessel-Bagge Foundation in 2001. The grounds around the museum houses a landscaped sculpture garden. It is made up by a plateau and the sloping terrain towards Øresund and is dominated by huge, ancient specimens trees and sweeping vistas of the sea. It contains works by such artists as Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Max Bill, Alexander Calder, Henri Laurens, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Miró and Henry Moore. The sculptures are either placed so that they can be viewed from within, in special sculpture yards or independently around the gardens, forming a synthesis with the lawns, the trees and the sea. There are also examples of site-specific art by such artists as Enzo Cucchi, Dani Karavan and George Trakas. Several times a week – in spring and autumn – Louisiana goes 'live'. Louisiana Live offers museum guests a series of engaging and highly interesting evenings that make the museum a cultural meeting-place. The Louisiana Café has one of Denmark's most beautiful panoramic views of the Øresund sound. Throughout the summer season, one can enjoy the food and the view outdoors from the Calder Patio. The museum is included in the Patricia Schultz book: "1,000 Places to See Before You Die." Website:_ www.louisiana.dk/

artwork: Walton Ford - "From the Royal Menagerie", 2009, © Walton Ford Watercolor, gouache, pencil, and ink on paper, 152.4 x 303.5 cm.

The Louisiana Museum on Modern Art is the forum for the first presentation in Scandinavia of American artist Walton Ford. The exhibition is opened from December 8th to March 6th 2011. His large-scale watercolours are melodramatic, powerful, and wondrous depictions of the way human civilization and our imagination has perceived and treated the animal world. Walton Ford is a brilliant artist in the classical sense and at the same time an impressive and truly contemporary storyteller. His large, masterful watercolours of animals are at once seducing and alarming – full of vivid colours, bizarre clues and surreal symbolism. Walton Ford paints watercolours populated with animals of all kinds: birds, fish, monkeys, oxen, tigers and lions, either consuming and fighting one another bestially or being mutilated by human beings in a grim, inscrutable yet beautiful universe. Everything in the artist's pictorial fables is painted with a wealth of details and accuracy that lures the viewer into a close study of almost every brush stroke. Stylistically, Walton Ford's animal tales recall classic naturalistic, zoological illustrations from a bygone age, executed with technical perfection; but on close examination they are far from the objectivity to which science aspires; rather, they are strangely horrifying representations, and sometimes with a humorous angle. . . Louisiana Museum has links between the exhibition activities and the development of the collections and the exhibitions often leave traces in the collection thanks to acquisitions or donations. The museum has gained a reputation of being in touch with the zeitgeist of the contemporary art world that draw in the crowds. The Lousiana Museum is a singular building designed with fundamental idea of joining architecture with art and nature. In 1958, architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert were commissioned to design the museum taking as their point of departure the old patrician villa. Over the years they have been responsible for the ongoing expansion of the museum. The Louisiana today stands as a masterpiece of Danish modernist architecture. An architecture particularly famous for the way the new extensions have been added to the old main building all the way adapting to the beautiful park landscape with its trees, forest lake, lawns and the Øresund sound. In 1966 and 1971 the museum was gradually extended with the West Wing. Then in 1976 this was followed by the Concert Hall. In 1982 the South Wing was built, and for many years it housed the museum's own collection. The South Wing was built into the landscape to maintain Louisiana's 'low-lying' look. With construction of the East Wing, which was completed in 1992, the buildings of the museum have been linked in a kind of circle. In 1994 the Children's House was built; it helps children and the young to develop close ties with the museum. Outside the landscape windows of the Children's House lies the Lake Garden with its winding paths, steep slopes and architectural works by a number of international architects such as Ralph Erskine, Joseph Paul Kleihues, Aldo Rossi and Dominique Perrault. New stylistic elements have been introduced here and there, but the continuity has been retained.

The Louisiana Museum is exhibiting the works of Anselm Kiefer until 9 January 2011. Kiefer is one of the post-war period's greatest and most famous German artists, and for many years he has enjoyed a central place in Louisiana's collection. This major exhibition features works from four decades from Kiefer's artistic voyage. This is the first major showing of this important artist in Scandinavia and at the same time forms a grand finale in Louisiana's showings of the post-war German 'gang of four': Polke, Richter, Baselitz and now Kiefer. A central theme of the exhibition is found in the artist's particular insistence on the relevance of grand narratives. Kiefer (born 1945) uses myths that to a considerable extent absorb classical material, but which must be called both the myths of the age and his own myths, often with a starting point in the artist's own traumatized nationality. The exhibition presents around 90 works ranging from the earliest years after the Academy of Art in Karlsruhe in 1969 and all the way up until today, showing brand new pictures by Kiefer, who in 2008 was honored with "Der Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels" (The Peace Prize of the German Booksellers), which was thus awarded for the first time to a visual artist. There are five loosely demarcated themes, each of which clarifies artistic concerns to which Kiefer's works offer central contributions: New Works, Landscape as Myth, World Time – Life Time, Iconoclasm and The Book. A brand new film about Anselm Kiefer with the title "Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow" is shown in the museum cinema. The film is by Sophie Fiennes and was shown to great acclaim outside the competition at this year's Cannes Festival. The film documents Kiefer's working processes and can be experienced as a personal journey into the universe that Kiefer has built up since 2000 in the mountains in the south of France. Kiefer's works also form part of the educational museum's educational program. The Museum has a long history of cultural-historical exhibitions and of presenting large photo, design and architecture shows, and their publishing program produces exquisite catalogs to accompany their exhibitions. When Louisiana celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, some of the artists who had exhibited at the museum were asked to design a print to be sold in support of Louisiana. A visit to this Dane jewel is a must for any art lover.
