Museum of Fine Arts Features the Artists who Designed Currier & Ives Prints Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:19 PM PST SPRINGFIELD, MA – The lithography firm of Currier & Ives produced more than 8,000 images, including pictures of newsworthy events and prints that reflected familiar all-American themes such as farm life, home and children, religion, sports and leisure, and westward expansion. To design their prints, the company used staff artists who are unknown today as well as a group of celebrated American artists. The work of some of these well-known artists will be highlighted in the exhibition Behind the Scenes: The Artists Who Worked for Currier & Ives, on view from June 10, 2008 through January 18, 2009, at the Museum of Fine Arts. Included will be prints based on the work of A.F. Tait, who did sporting and Western scenes; Frances (Fanny) Flora Palmer, who was responsible for the majority of landscapes produced by the firm; and George Durrie, the New England winter scene painter. Currier & Ives was also inspired by the work of the well-known artists George Durrie, and Eastman Johnson. The prints in the exhibition are from the museum's Lenore B. and Sidney A. Alpert Currier & Ives collection, one of the largest collections of Currier & Ives prints in the country. The Museum of Fine Arts is located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. Free parking is available in the Edwards Street parking lots. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and college students, $5 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. Springfield residents are free with proof of address. The fee provides admission to all four Springfield Museums and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden. Work by Marguerite and William Zorach at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:17 PM PST NEW YORK, NY.- Michael Rosenfeld Gallery presents its first solo exhibition featuring the work of Marguerite Zorach (1887-1968) and William Zorach (1887-1966). On view through August 13, this exhibition consists of a selection of watercolors by each. The six 1915 watercolors by Marguerite Zorach were completed during a summer excursion in 1915 to the White Mountains hamlet of Randolph, New Hampshire. A noticeable feature in these works is the attention to detail, everything from the furniture in the rooms to the patterning of the wallpaper and the design of the rugs. In general the works display the modernist conventions of simplification of form and dramatic flattening of perspective. Later Zorach turned five of the six original watercolors into a set of hand-watercolored transfer lithographs.
Brussels Centre for Fine Arts Presents 'Views on Europe' Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:05 PM PST Brussels, Belgium - For the first time, Views on Europe presents the whole spectrum of 19th-century German painting. At its core is the way German artists saw other European countries. Via some 150 masterpieces from the state museums of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich and from other major German collections this exhibition explores the roots of European culture. In an unprecedented cooperative undertaking by the three greatest state collections of 19th-century painting (the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen), supplemented by important loans from other German museums and galleries, the exhibition looks at German art of the 19th century from a variety of perspectives. In doing so, it pays particular attention to its many international connections. Major European countries and regions are linked with particular themes. Countless stimuli from 19th-century Europe's art, its past, and its present were reflected in German art. These interactions can be clearly seen in the exhibition.

National Gallery of Canada Honors Daphne Odjig with First Solo Exhibtion Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:01 PM PST OTTAWA.- So groundbreaking was her work in the 60s and 70s, fellow artist and friend Norval Morrisseau called her "Picasso's grandmother." While Daphne Odjig's work does embrace Cubism at times, as can be seen in "L'amour fou", her colorful and playful homage to Picasso, Morrisseau's tongue-in-cheek nickname for her claims a rich pictorial tradition of color, line, rhythm and movement that long predates the art of the 20th.century. The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) proudly presents "The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig", the institution's first solo exhibition by a First Nations' female artist. Curated by guest curator Bonnie Devine and co-organized with the Art Gallery of Sudbury, this exhibition is circulating as part of On Tour, the NGC's traveling exhibitions program. The Ottawa venue is presented by Pratt & Whitney Canada, takes place from October 23, 2009 to January 3, 2010 in the Special Exhibitions Galleries and includes 56 works, which span 44 years of Odjig's artistic production. "Daphne Odjig holds an important place among the great artists of Canada," said NGC Director, Marc Mayer. "She is respected nationally and internationally as a matriarchal figure who has captured her people's voice, history and legends in a unique artistic style. We are honored to be celebrating Daphne Odjig's impressive career in this in-depth exploration of her work." "Pratt & Whitney Canada is proud to present Daphne Odjig's colorful body of work," said John Wyzykowski, Vice President, Mississauga & Turbofan Programs, P&WC. "We're proud to support arts and culture through our association with various organizations such as the National Gallery of Canada." "The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition" includes examples of her legend paintings, history murals, erotica, abstractions and landscapes and is presented in six themes: Our History Daphne Odjig's life and those of her forebears are depicted in stories of migration, flight and endurance. Highlights include: "Genocide No. 1" (1971), from the NGC's collection, a powerful rendering of the battle of Fort Dearborn near Chicago in which Odjig's great-great-grandfather was a combatant and "Roots" (1979), a large triptych that depicts the artist's own story of courage and survival in three stages: the harmonious life she knew on the reserve as a child, the identity crisis she experienced in the city, and the final stages of her life when she found peace in her Aboriginal roots. Our Legends Earlier works, such as "The Eternal Struggle" (1966), illustrate Odjig's contribution to the Woodland School of Anishnabe painters, while later pieces such as the powerful collage, "Thunderbird Woman" (1971), start to challenge the dominant conventions of this style and move towards a more fluid and expressive approach. Pow Wow at Wikwemikong The "Pow Wow at Wikwemikong", staged despite the objections of the church, heralded the resurgence of Indigenous cultural and artistic production after years of attempted assimilation and repression. For Odjig this event was the central factor in her emergence as an Aboriginal person, as an artist and as an advocate for the education and economic development of her people. It set the stage for the later works that would define her style, such as the large diptych "Spiritual Renewal" (1984). In this metaphorical painting, Odjig illustrates as a series of processions, the coming of Christian missionaries and the coming of the drummers, and, at the centre of the second panel, the sweet grass ceremony that was the turning point and culmination of the first pow wow. Tales of the Smokehouse A collection of erotica unique to the history of Aboriginal painting, these drawings were created for Dr. Herbert Schwarz's book of the same title, published in 1974. Our Land This is Odjig's homage to the beauty and power of the forest. Some works, such as "People of the Forest" (1981), convey her response to the clear-cutting of British Columbia's forests and the pollution and destruction of wildlife habitat that followed. Our Families The seven images in this grouping reveal that her work is rooted in a spirit of deep affection and connection to her family as well as the values that were instilled in her by the small community at Wikwemikong. A highlight is "Two Ladies Quilting" (1982), which portrays the metaphorical and communal act of stitching together remnants of color and shape and the reciprocal act of telling, transmitting and relating that is central to the reconstruction of a people. The Artist's Life Odjig's practice has always centered on a spirit of experimentation and this section depicts her influences and the challenges she faced as an Aboriginal living in a dominant non-Aboriginal culture. The works reveal the artist's struggle and eventual triumph over society's attempts to colonize and subdue the spirit and creativity that is intrinsic to her work. Our Editor Tours The Magnificent Malmö Konsthall Museum In Malmö, Sweden Posted: 18 Nov 2011 07:51 PM PST In the Malmö Konsthall most of the gallery has a ceiling constructed like a latticework of 550 domes with both natural and artificial light sources. The height of the ceiling varies. The light well - with the higher ceiling - has a big sloping skylight towards the north. Klas Anshelm got inspiration for the construction when visiting the sculptor Constantin Brancusi in his Paris studio. The result is a gallery that is both functional and aesthetic. An exhibition space that presents the artist with endless possibilities. The Malmö Konsthall was renovated in 1994. At that time the exhibition hall and the adjacent older brick building known as Hantverkshuset (the Craft Building) were linked together. This created new spaces for a bookshop, restaurant, Hall C and space for children's activities as well as a smaller exhibition space called Mellanrummet (the In-between Space). Malmö Konsthall's primary mandate is to exhibit both international and national art ranging from the classics of modernism to current experiments. Over the years exhibitions have featured such artists as Munch, van Gogh, Kandinsky, Klee, Miró, Giacometti, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Louise Bourgeois, Peter Greenaway and Tony Cragg. The boundaries between the various art forms are kept fluid by associated special events: theatre, film, poetry, video installations, multimedia, music, lectures and debates. In conjunction with the exhibitions Malmö Konsthall organizes extensive educational activities for both children and adults. It is also possible to book private tours of current exhibitions. Each year Malmö Konsthall has around 400,000 visitors. The museum arranges exhibitions with an international focus which encompasses both the classics of modern art and current experiments. The paintings, sculptures, installations etc. cover the major modern and contemporary movements and styles and are set against a background of natural and artificial light that gives the artist unlimited possibilities to present their art and visitors to view it. The gallery has many fascinating exhibitions and programmes year-round.

The title is derived from Haus-Rucker-Co's seat object for two people which conjoins technology and body and stands as an example of the attempt to achieve an artistically radical redefinition of the social environment and interpersonal relationships.

Heavenly, Stately, Courtly Exhibition at the Museum Kunst Palast Posted: 18 Nov 2011 07:31 PM PST
DUSSELDORF, GERMANY - Düsseldorf is currently holding a Jan Wellem Year to commemorate the 350th birthday of the Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658-1716), lovingly called "Jan Wellem" by the local population. Special features of the exhibition include a range of marble and bronze sculptures and several artistic jewellery items from the Jan Wellem and Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici Collection. On exhibition 20th September through 11th January, 2009. The starting point of this exhibition, presented by museum kunst palast on the occasion of this anniversary, is a number of works from the Prince Elector's gallery that are still available and which form part of the museum's own inventory. These items include works by Peter Paul Rubens, Johann Friedrich Ardin, Antonio Bellucci, Gabriel Grupello, Gian Antonio Pelligrini, Paul Pontius, Rachel Ruysch, Eglon Hendrik van der Neer, Adriaen van der Werff, Jan Frans van Douven and Frans van Mieris the Elder. It was a great loss for Düsseldorf when the vast majority of Jan Wellem's amazingly large gallery with approx. 760 paintings was moved to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich during Düsseldorf's evacuation from French cannon fire and as a result of the princely succession in 1806. Nevertheless, a number of important works remained in Düsseldorf. Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel, the curator of the anniversary exhibition, decided that its centrepiece should be the newly researched monumental painting by Peter Paul Rubens "The Ascension of St. Mary" (on permanent loan from Kunstakademie). This large-format painting was moved from Brussels to Düsseldorf in 1712, where it is now the most important legacy of this legendary gallery in Düsseldorf. "The painting has an exciting history that reads like a detective story. It has survived fires, bombardments and overpainting by academic artists and was nearly lost in the chaos of war." (Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel) The dramatic ups and down of these wooden panels, their different versions, copies, successor works and numerous responses by artists and literary figures are for the first time highlighted in the exhibition "Heavenly - Magnificent - Courtly". The development of the painting is reflected in a selection of loans from international collections which are closely related to these works, thus helping us understand the imagery of Rubens in the light of the Catholic Reform and also the Prince Elector's political schemes that were associated with it. Visitors can look forward to a special experience at the exhibition. Using state-of-the-art technology, the original festive frame of the monumental painting "The Ascension of St. Mary" is presented in a virtual motion-picture 3D reconstruction, so that visitors feel transported to the original church environment in Brussels. The frame was recently discovered by Dr. Baumgärtel in a church in Brussels. It has always been the dream of the Curator of this exhibition and head of the Gallery of museum kunst palast that the original Brussels frame - or at least a reconstruction - should be reunited with the original painting. The frame includes a semi-circular marble relief showing God the Father. For the time being, this can only be done through a virtual presentation. Not only Rubens but also Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, Jan Wellem's second wife, and her father Cosimo III contributed greatly to the Prince Elector's passion as a collector, helping and enabling him to set up a unique collection of works, based on a gallery in Florence. They include self-portraits of Düsseldorf court painters and works by the Dutch Leyden School, i.e. Jan van Douven, Adriaen van der Werff and the still life painter Rachel Ruysch, as well as a range of light-hearted costume paintings of the princely couple. Special features of the exhibition are a range of marble and bronze sculptures from the Courts of Florence and Düsseldorf, particularly by Gabriel Grupello, and several artistic jewellery items. These objects give us an idea of the aesthetic culture of the Prince Elector and his wife. Visit the Museum Kunst Palast at : www.museum-kunst-palast.de/forceses/lang1/doc1A.html
