The National Gallery of Denmark Exhibits its Rehung European Art 1300-1800 Posted: 27 Nov 2011 09:06 PM PST Copenhagen.- The National Gallery of Denmark is proud to present "European Art 1300-1800", on view from November 26th. "European Art 1300-1800" constitutes stage two of a major reinvention and revitalisation of the collections at the National Gallery of Denmark. The spring of 2011 saw the opening of stage one with the display of "Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900" and "French Art 1900-30", and on 31 March 2012 the range of new displays will be complete with the opening of "Danish and International Art after 1900". This exhibition features the older European art housed at the National Gallery of Denmark, which constitutes the oldest art collection in Denmark and has roots going all the way back to the private collections of the kings of Denmark. From the early 16th century up until the abolishment of absolute monarchy in 1848 the kings acquired the art themselves and so left their personal imprint on the collection; and, as is only to be expected, they did so with varying degrees of passion and a more or less sure eye for quality. For this reason the collection encompasses the masterful and the mediocre alike, but by virtue of its tremendous scope – and recent, judicious acquisitions – it is uniquely representative within many areas. Overall, "European Art 1300-1800" is arranged in order of chronology and country of origin, thereby allowing for a relatively easy overview of and insight into the tremendous wealth of material. You are initially offered a choice of three different routes through the five centuries of art, which place especial emphasis on Italian, Dutch, Flemish, French, Spanish, and German art. The three routes each outline different movements within the arts and also point to crucial chapters within the collection's history. Naturally, "European Art 1300-1800" offers a welcome opportunity to reacquaint yourself with important masterpieces by some of the leading figures within art history such as Mantegna, Titian, El Greco, Jordaens, and Bernini. Artists such as Lucas Cranach, Peter Paul Rubens, and Rembrandt also command special attention in this display, where their works are presented in a monographic setting alongside works by their pupils or by artists from the same scene or circle. Conversely, the display also presents undercurrents within the art scene as well as some of those artists who have been standing in the shadow of well-known masters. Similarly, the display encompasses examples of motifs that are very rarely treated within the arts, e.g. depictions from the colonies in Africa and Latin America. All the new displays of the permanent collections share a common ambition: to ensure that historical material is relevant to and resonates with contemporary audiences, for example through new digital and analogue means of presentation, communication, and education. In tandem with the main outlines and routes through the display, "European Art 1300-1800" also presents particular focus areas that offer a historical or contemporary perspective on the art, subjecting it to a variety of gazes. A digital desk provides access to films and information about the works; here, the artists Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen and Kaspar Bonnén are among those who offer new perspectives on the art. The rooms featuring Italian art focus on prevailing perceptions of what it means to be a human being through the ages, a theme which is addressed under headlines such as "From Type to Individual", "Moving Man" and "Travelling Man". In one room, a range of audio tracks offer you the opportunity to listen to five young audience members as well as a theologian, a psychoanalyst, and an art historian all commenting on and interpreting two selected paintings. The young Danish writer Julia Butschkow has written a piece of fiction based on a French 18th century painting. The short story presents life at the French court as seen through the eyes of little Prince Louise XIV, and you can listen to an audio version of the story while standing in front of the work itself. Last, but by no means least, the Gallery has created a family area among large-scale history paintings of biblical and mythological scenes. Here you will find a space and texts set aside for parents to read aloud to young visitors, and families with children aged 6 to 10 years can play "Match-SMK", an all-new board game that focuses on telling good stories based on works of art. The Statens Museum for Kunst ("Statens Museum" or sometimes "National Gallery of Denmark") is the Danish national gallery located in Copenhagen. The museum collects, registers, maintains, researches in and handles Danish and foreign art dating from the 14th Century till the present day, mostly with their origins in western culture circles. As far as the Danish art is concerned the museum must invest in and maintain representative collections. The collection of the Danish National Gallery originates in the Art Chamber (Danish: Kunstkammeret) of the Danish monarchs. The most important purchase during Morell's term as Keeper was "Christ as the Suffering Redeemer" by Andrea Mantegna. Since then a great variety of purchases have been made. During the 19th century the works were almost exclusively by Danish artists, and for this reason the Museum has an unrivalled collection of paintings from the so-called Danish Golden Age. That the country was able to produce pictures of high artistic quality was something new, and a consequence of the establishment of the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in 1754. More recently, the collection has been influenced by generous donations and long-term loans. In autumn 1998, an extension was opened designed by the architects Anna Maria Indrio and Mads Møller from Arkitektfirmaet C. F. Møller. This new building was constructed in the park behind the original building and is connected to it by a glass-covered walkway, 'the street of sculptures'. The 'street' stretches along the full length of the museum, and within it concerts and dance performances are held. The old and new buildings are connected by one large-scale amalgamation between past and present. Facing the front is the old building and from Østre Anlæg is a new and modern building - seen from the side is a glass-covered street that connects the old and new buildings. The museum's collections constitute almost 9,000 paintings and sculptures, approx. 300,000 works of art on paper as well as more than 2,600 plaster casts of figures from ancient times, the middle-ages and the Renaissance. The major part of the museum's older collections comes from the art chambers of Danish kings. The museum contains collections of art dating from the twelfth century. In the older European and Danish collections there are represantations by Mantegna, Titian, Tintoretto, Breugel, Peter Paul Rubens, Jordaens, Frans Hals, Bloemaert, Gysbrechts and Rembrandt. The modern collection comprises works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Emil Nolde. Local Danish painters are richly represented with the styles of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Oluf Høst, Edward Weihe, Olaf Rude and Haral Giersing as well as the Danish sculptor Carl Bonnesen. Modern art is a substantial part of the Royal Collection of Paintings and Sculpture. The collection is representative, not only of Danish art history, but also of foreign art which has influenced Danish artists. Thus the museum has a considerable collection of paintings by Emil Nolde and an important selection of American and German contemporary art. The Royal Cast Collection consists of plaster casts of statues and reliefs from collections, museums, temples, churches, and public places throughout the world. The Collection of Prints and Drawings contains about 300,000 works: copperprints, drawings, etchings, watercolours, lithographic works and other kinds of art on paper. In 1843 the collection, which had so far been the king's private collection, opened to the public. When the present Statens Museum for Kunst was finished in 1896, the Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings was moved into the building together with The Royal Collection of Paintings and The Royal Cast Collection. Although the collection contains a great number of foreign works, Danish art makes out the main part of the acquisitions. Nowhere in the world can you get such a detailed and broad overview over Danish art from the 17th century until the present day. Norman Rockwell Museum celebrates "Norman Rockwell and the Ghost of Dickens" Posted: 27 Nov 2011 07:20 PM PST STOCKBRIDGE, MA.- Norman Rockwell is well known for his enduring illustrations of the holidays, which brought good cheer to millions of Americans. In his autobiography, "My Adventures as an Illustrator," the artist described important memories from his youth that were seminal to his later work. Of particular importance were Rockwell's recollections focused on his father reading Charles Dickens stories aloud to his sons in the evening after they finished their homework. Throughout his life, Rockwell would cite the significance of those nightly readings and the influence of Dickens on his art. This holiday season Norman Rockwell Museum celebrates the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens' birth, with a spirited new exhibition that explores the literary giant's influence on the artist's work—"Norman Rockwell and the Ghost of Dickens" is on view at the Museum from November 19, 2011 through March 4, 2012.

Curated by renowned Canadian art scholar Dennis Reid with art critic Sarah Milroy, the exhibition is based largely on holdings from the AGO's permanent collection and remains on view until May 13, 2012. An accompanying catalogue edited by Dennis Reid will be published for the exhibition. Jack Chambers: Light, Spirit, Time, Place and Life, is co-published by Goose Lane Editions and the AGO. The soft cover, 240-page volume features 100 full colour images of works by Chambers.

Exhibition at Moderna Museet Features Gallery Ynglingagatan 1 Posted: 27 Nov 2011 06:37 PM PST STOCKHOLM.- Following this spring's events and magazine projects on the 1980s, Moderna Museet moves on in Swedish art history to the 1990s, with the exhibition Moment – Ynglingagatan 1. The non-commercial gallery Ynglingagatan 1 was a vital forum for Swedish contemporary art in the 1990s, featuring international artists such as Pierre Huyghe, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Takashi Murakami and M/M (Paris), decades before their works were recognised by critics and major institutions all over the world. With modest means and fuelled by a feeling of exasperation with the existing art scene, Ynglingagatan 1 took matters in their own hands in autumn 1993. Their first exhibition was Bjarne Melgaard. The focus on relational aesthetics, cross-disciplinary art, design and fashion, and a distinctly international profile helped to set Ynglagatan 1 apart from other galleries and art institutions in Stockholm. Ynglingagatan 1 was also a launching pad for the careers of a group of Swedish artists, including Karl Holmqvist , Ann-Sofie Back, Peter Geschwind and Johanna Billing.

The Hionas Gallery to Show Unique Photography by Warwich Saint Posted: 27 Nov 2011 06:36 PM PST New York City.- Hionas Gallery is pleased to present "Warwick Saint: Body Of Work", on view at the gallery from December 1st through December 30th. This will be the very first solo exhibition from one of the style & fashion world's most sought-after photographers. For this show, Saint and gallery owner Peter Hionas have carefully compiled a selection of twenty photographs from the artist's recent work with tattooed models, artists and other acquaintances. The resulting collection – provocative, sultry and noir all at once – is both indicative of Saint's extensive work with nudes and starlets, and something of a departure from his oeuvre, revealing a more in-depth narrative with his subjects. There will be an opening reception for the artist from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday, November 30th. A partial nude ascends a shadowy staircase, every inch of her shoulders, back and thighs covered with tattoos; a seductive blonde stands in mid turn, most likely toward our gaze, holding a glistening six-shooter in one hand, with a desolate junkyard as the backdrop. In these portraits and others, such as Night Hotel, in which Saint's lovely subject grasps a drink and cigarette while lying prone on a white leather sofa, a story is being told that is for the viewer to decide, even inhabit if they're so daring. While many photos of movie stars or models can feel fleeting, given the subjects' built-in celebrity and all that entails, Saint captures a permanence with these women that is unmistakable. Each tattooed model he photographs is a living and breathing work of art, with flesh as canvas. Whether their body art is a coat of armor, spiritual decoration or something else altogether, the artist's lens performs a balancing act each time: "I'm giving them a character, a part to play in the photo shoot," says Saint of his subjects. "There's a sensuality I wanted to bring out…but I'm always respectful of the fact that they are both woman and canvas." In "Body Of Work", as with all of the artist's work, the viewer is no mere voyeur. For Saint, beautiful women who bear equally beautiful body art is worthy of portraiture that invites us in, to view their story and find some element within that strikes a chord. However, Saint insists that any symbolism of particular tattoos or these women's respective motives for each work is not an element of this collection. "For me it's about showing these women in a certain light," he continues, "to elevate them, make them beautiful without judgment." Warwick Saint (b. 1972) is a New York based photographer of South African extraction. Saint's portraiture is in constant demand from celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Bridges, Liv Tyler, Paz de la Huerta and countless others. His work has been featured on the covers of dozens of fashion and lifestyle magazine, including L'Oficiel, BlackBook, Arena, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Gotham, Inked and Flaunt, among others. Additionally, Saint has photographed hundreds of models, celebrities, and advertisements for publications like Whitewall, Interview, London Sunday Times, and Rolling Stone. From a very early age, Saint displayed a preternatural skill and love for the art of photography, often removing himself to the African bush to shoot landscapes and the local fauna. His father, the late Kenny Saint, was founder and Creative Director of Grapplegroup, a groundbreaking graphic design studio in South Africa and the UK. Spending many hours at his father's side in the studio, Saint quickly developed an eye for color and style. Rare Master Works Highlight Christie's Post-War & Contemporary Art Sale Posted: 27 Nov 2011 06:30 PM PST NEW YORK, NY - Christie's Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 13th will offer fresh to market works from some of the most prominent artists of Post-War and Contemporary Art. Robert Manley, Head of Christie's New York Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale said: "The May 13 Evening Sale will draw collectors with rare and exceptional masterworks that encompass the full spectrum of Post-War and Contemporary Art. Collectors in this market have become more selective and Christie's specialists have carefully edited this sale.  The 54 lot sale is expected to achieve $71-104 million. Highlighting the Evening Sale is a group of 20 works from the collection of the renowned American philanthropist Betty Freeman. Leading this selection is one of the most important works to come to the auction market by David Hockney, Beverly Hills Housewife, (estimate: $6-10 million), 1966-1967, which immortalizes Freeman and may break the auction record for a work by the artist. A rare, early painting by Sam Francis from 1954 entitled Grey (estimate: $2-3 million), highlights the Francis works in this collection. First exhibited in Dorothy Miller's seminal 1954 MoMA show, Twelve Americans, the painting was acquired directly from Francis's private collection by Betty Freeman, who enjoyed a long and close relationship with the artist. The catalogue cover lot, Roy Lichtenstein's Frolic, 1977, (estimate: $4-6 million), was inspired by his own 1962 painting, Girl with Ball, by ads and comic books, and by one of the greatest painters in art history – Pablo Picasso. In Frolic, Picasso is seen through the filter of Pop, as his celebrated 1932 painting Baigneuse au ballon de plage in the collection of New York's MoMA is interpreted with an unusual and irreverent twist. Among the master works offered from the Freeman Collection are fresh to market paintings and sculptures by Roy Lichtenstein, Dan Flavin, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Joseph Cornell. Masterfully executed, Jean-Michel Basquiat's Mater, 1982 (estimate: $5-7 million), is an electrifying, rare rendition of a female figure within Basquiat's oeuvre. Representing the raw power of life, the lone figure can be interpreted as both a mother and martyr. Basquiat employs a combination of graffiti, voodoo, and canonic motifs, exploring themes that would ultimately become constants as his career progressed. Reminiscent of its counterpart, Pater, also executed in 1982, this work explores the psychic drama and anxieties about the artist's life that were ultimately played out in his work. Painted during what many would describe as the apex of Basquiat's tragically short yet undeniably brilliant career, this work exudes the energy of a young artist at the pinnacle of his creative output. The self-referential, ironic and ingenious, Painting for Kubler by John Baldessari (estimate: $1.5-2 million), belongs to a rare group of groundbreaking paintings that the artist created between 1966-68. Experimenting with the relationship between language and art, Baldessari establishes a discourse between the written and interpreted realms of language and visual imagery, prompting him to become one of the pioneers of the revolutionary movement that set the ground work for text-led art later manifested in the works by artists such as Jenny Holtzer, Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha. For this particular work, Baldessari was inspired by the writings of George Kubler, who defied formalism and postulated the idea that all artworks are bound by shared concepts that may be linked across time. Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park No. 117, 1979 (estimate: $4-6 million), is a consummate work for the artist, luminously illustrating the best qualities of his most celebrated series of paintings. Cultivated over a period of twenty years, the extensive Ocean Park cycle shares a captivating juxtaposition of abstraction and representation, geometry and spontaneity, convention and progression, and yet each work is wholly new, freshly improvised and infused with a particular light and atmosphere of its own. Through his use of bright and cool blues and yellows, the artist communicates the ephemeral quality of nature, capturing the sensation and radiance of the coastal environment in which this work was created. Leading five works in the sale by Andy Warhol is The Last Supper (Camel/57), 1986 (estimate: $4-6 million). At nearly 10 feet long, the painting is a whimsical adaptation of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece in Santa Maria delle Grazie. By juxtaposing the holy scene with the number 57 and an image of a camel, Warhol creates his own unique iconography combining industrial drawing, painting and commercialism. Among the Contemporary artists featured in the sale is Peter Doig with the work, Night Fishing, 1993, (estimate: $3-4 million). This large-scale painting is an evocative, quintessential example of Doig's most celebrated theme: the canoe in water. Imbued with a mysterious, other-worldly quality, Doig's thought-provoking work combines the influences of great masters Monet and Turner with the painterly processes of Rothko and Pollock. Jeff Koon's gleaming, Duchampian Jim Beam – J. B. Turner Engine, 1986, ($700,000-1,000,000), belongs to the artist's Luxury and Degradation series. Koons drew inspiration for the sculpture from a commemorative collector's bottle in the form of a locomotive issued by the Jim Beam company. He gifted this particular work to the bourbon company to express his appreciation for their cooperation throughout the project's inception. This work marks the first time Koons would work with stainless steel, a material he would champion and take to new heights in later works. Debuting in the Evening Sale, Kerry James Marshall is represented by his definitive work, Our Town, 1995 (estimate: $500,000-700,000), a work that speaks about American race and identity with the poignant tone that is emblematic of the artist. Within this work Marshall depicts a scene which is equal parts familiar and surreal, presenting an idyllic narrative that is disrupted by the artist's painterly devices. By utilizing subtle symbolism and a textured canvas, Marshall rids the composition of its illusionary aspects, and draws attention to the artifice put forth by the global perception of American life.

Some say the rising tide of globalization threatens to drown individuality in a sea of sameness. Zou Cao resists this possibility by using his own fingerprint as a motif, asserting his unique identity, and by extension, the importance of all individuals. In past works, Cao used actual fingerprints as a drawing technique to render politically charged scenes. For the paintings in this show, he has expanded the technique, literally, by enlarging a single print to overlap portraits of well-known figures such as Chairman Mao, Madonna, Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson. The images declare that all people, famous or not, are unique and that despite our increasingly collective existence, every individual adds their singular mark to our shared history.

The Newark Museum Shows "Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul" Posted: 27 Nov 2011 06:25 PM PST Newark, NJ.- The Newark Museum is proud to present "Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul", survey of modern and contemporary Cuban artists that explores the rich cultural roots of Cuban art. This exhibition consists of more than fifty objects, including paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculpture, installations, and audio works by 22 artists. "Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul" features such major figures in Cuban art as Wifredo Lam, Manuel Mendive, Jose Bedia and Sandra Ramos. "Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul" is on view at the museum until August 14th. After Newark, the exhibition is tentatively scheduled to travel to two additional venues: the Chelsea Art Museum in New York City and the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ajiaco seeks to interpret the diverse social dimensions of Cuban art in a global context through the exploration of its relationship with African, Asian, European, and Indigenous influences and belief systems. The art incorporates the tales of the Orisha of Africa, the calligraphy of Chinese Tao Te Ching, and the rituals of indigenous peoples. The formats change, the materials vary, but the mix remains constant in both Cuban and Cuban American art. Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul is not necessarily about one group however; it explores diaspora, embracing those aspects of Latin American culture that are sympathetic to all. In broader terms, this project addresses both the immigrant experience and the expression of cultural identity in a new place. The curator, Dr. Gail Gelburd, writes, "Isolated and yet educated, restricted and yet heralded, the Cuban artist embodies the angst of their situation and yet embraces the loftiest of goals. Their syncretist tradition and heritage allows them to go beyond the monotheistic traditions in order to find the origins of their soul, the geist or inner spirit of their art." In 1939, anthropologist Fernando Ortiz characterized Cuban culture as ajiaco, a rich stew consisting of a large variety of ingredients. The ingredients of the "stew" include Catholicism brought in by the Spaniards; the spirituality of the Yoruba slaves and their cultural traditions from Africa; and the Chinese indentured servants who brought Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. The base of the stew is the indigenous people, such as Tainos, who were almost wiped out by the Spaniards. This exhibition is a survey of modern and contemporary Cuban artists that explores these rich cultural roots of Cuban art. In contemporary society, the "stew" has become thicker and richer as the influences become more complex and intermixed: the artist now borrows not only from the traditional cultures that populated the island, but also appropriates from contemporary everyday life. The exhibition includes works by leading artists in a variety of media, from paintings, works on paper and photography to mixed-media sculpture and installations. Record Attendance Marks Opening of 14th American International Fine Art Fair Posted: 27 Nov 2011 06:23 PM PST PALM BEACH, FL.- International Fine Art Expositions (IFAE) founders and AIFAF organizers David and Lee Ann Lester reported that a record 5,100 collectors attended the opening Vernissage honoring the Norton Museum of Art Tuesday evening at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Sales during the first day of the fair indicate that the US art economy is rebounding strongly – consistent with very strong auction sales in New York on Wednesday – where a Giacometti sculpture sold for a record $105 million – a new high for any work of art. For my father, the publisher, photography was more than a hobby, more like a passion. I virtually breathed in photography through my father." In his twenties, he wanted to let his creativity run free. University in Berlin, film studies in Vancouver, Canada. "After completing my film studies, I made, wrote and directed films. All of that was suddenly over when my father passed away." That was in 1988. That same year also saw the death of Voigt's beloved grandmother Isolde. She, too, had been an enthusiastic photographer who always had her Leica and Roleiflex with her and was always taking pictures. It was these two strokes of fate within one year that changed the life of the prospective artist. A crucial experience for Voigt. "Following the early death of my father, I joined the publishing company – at 28 years of age. That changed my life and therefore also the creativity." And his longing to become a photographer's assistant and later a photographer himself receded into the distance. For twenty years, Christian Voigt, representing the fourth generation, managed his parents' publishing company, until it was sold in January of 2007. However, photography never ceased to be an important element of the artist's life. It had become a passion a long time ago, just like it had for his father and grandmother. Christian Voigt continued the family tradition of taking a camera on his travels. He gradually became more familiar with the world of photography, tried different techniques, refined and developed his skills. Until the desire to turn the passion into a profession became overwhelming and creativity once again took centre stage in Christian Voigt's life. "At some stage, I simply allowed myself to live my dream", says Christian Voigt. "I was the fourth generation of a family of publishers, I was not required to set up my own business, but simply had to take over. I was lucky and it was luxury, but it was not what I had in mind. My motivation was to do my own thing, to develop something, to use my hands to establish something.
