Büdelsdorf, Germany.- When NordArt opens on Saturday 4th June, the world is again invited to get together. Now with a dozen years behind it, the 12th summer exhibition brings together painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, and installations from 245 artists in 55 countries. Their works speak not only for themselves, but also and especially interacting with, and against the background of, the unique stage of the old Carlshütte foundry buildings in Büdelsdorf – developing new perspectives in their mutual association and disassociation. NordArt 2011 remains open until October 2nd.

Some of the many globally active artists exhibiting their works this summer in the cavernous halls of the old foundry and in the extensive park inclue, the sculptor Zeng Chenggang, director of Tsinghua University in Beijing, Richard Brixel from Sweden, famous for his large bronze sculptures decorating the port cities in his home country and the sculptor Peter Lundberg from the USA who began work on site on his two 15 metre high concrete sculptures in the middle of April. Anja Zholud from Russia will develop a new installation for her bunker, which created a great deal of excitement in 2010, Sara Shamma from Syria will show her realistic painting.

Getting involved in discussions, learning from one another, passing on know how and exchanging experience – this was the basic idea behind the original concept for the annual NordArt Symposium, that initially focussed solely on sculpture. Only in the last three years was the symposium concept expanded to include painting and installations. Around 20 artists started work on their NordArt exhibits at the Carlshütte in mid-May. Participants include the stone sculptor Ton Kalle from the Netherlands, and the Russian wood sculptor Valeriy Pchelin, the Chinese painter Huang Yng, and the Macedonian painter Vuk Mitesvki – who will be working on site on his impressive, 8-meter high pictures.

NordArt, the largest art exhibition in northern Europe, is organised by the Kunstwerk Carlshütte, the non-profit initiative of the ACO Group and the cities of Büdelsdorf and Rendsburg. The exhibition area comprises the 22,000 square meter former Carlshütte iron foundry buildings, the ACO coach house, the garden house, and the 60,000 square meter park. Public spaces in the towns are also used as exhibition locations. NordArt was conceived in 1999 by the managing director Wolfgang Gramm, who continues to organise the exhibition every year. 1400 artists from 81 countries applied to take part this year. Wolfgang Gramm, director of the Kunstwerk Carlshütte and a co-founder and jury member of NordArt, says he and his colleagues have been "overwhelmed" by the response to this year's event. "We've had works submitted by 1,327 artists from 81 countries, with particularly large numbers from Poland, Russia, China, the United States and of course Germany. The quality of the work is outstanding." The jury has already viewed all the submissions and selected those to be shown this year.

NordArt is now northern Europe's biggest art exhibition, organised by the Kunstwerk Carlshütte, the non-profit initiative of the ACO Group and the cities of Büdelsdorf and Rendsburg. This year's exhibition, the twelfth of its kind, runs from 12 June to 3 October and features work by 220 artists from 57 countries, including painting, graphics, photography, video, sculpture, objets d'art and installations. One third of the entries came from Germany, and this is reflected in the makeup of the exhibition. The display space includes a 22,000 square metre former foundry, 60,000 square metres of parkland, other buildings, and public squares in the town of Büdelsdorf. The exhibition also features the highly respected NordArt Symposium, bringing together different generations of artists from around the world to engage in debate, make new acquaintances, and work. The results are then displayed in the Carlshütte and the sculpture park.

The NordArt-Prize, awarded for the first time this year, was won by the Chinese sculptor Zeng Chenggang. As officially announced, Hans-Julius and Johanna Ahlmann (ACO Group), the sponsors of the 10,000 Euro prize, chose Zeng Chenggang as a representative of the dawn of the Asian era and the enormous changes affecting Chinese art. The award presentation ceremony will take place at the opening of NordArt 2011, on 4 June 2011. Professor Zeng Chenggang, Director of the Academy for Art and Design at Tsinghua University in Beijing, is represented at this year's NordArt with his work of a lotus blossom – a symbol for a continuously changing world.  The first NordArt-Prize is also expressly seen as a call to look much more closely at a country which is increasingly influencing the cultural sphere around the world. The two sponsors intend to redefine the criteria used to select the winner each year taking into account the changing circumstances. Zeng was one of seven artists shortlisted for the prize by the jury – which included the state museum director Dr. Jürgen Fitschen, and Dr. Jan Drees, Head of the Sculpture Department at Schloss Gottorf. In addition to Chenggang, the candidates included the Czech painter Ivan Bukowski, the Russian photographer Julia Borovaya, the German sculptor Juliana Jüttner, the German painter Karl Oppermann, the Syrian painter Sara Shamma, and the Swedish sculptor Richard Brixel. The Public Choice Award worth 1000 Euro was won by a large margin by the Finnish artistic duo Teja and Pekka Isorättyä for their marionettes stitched together from pig skin ("Chicharrona"). The second prize awarded by the NordArt visitors, who had three months to hand in their votes, went to Wolfgang Stillers work "Match Stick Men" – huge burned-down matchsticks with human faces. The third prize went to Hiroko from Japan for her performance "Prayer for 1000 souls and 1000 works of art". The NordArt-Prize winner and the three Public Choice Award winners will all be invited to take part in NordArt 2011. The prize winners were announced at the "Long Night of the Lights", an event arranged by the Kunstwerk Carlshütte two weeks before the end of the exhibition. More than 2000 visitors attended this event in the Carlshütte on Saturday.

The first NordArt took place in 1999, since then it has established itself as Northern Europe's largest annual art exhibition. The NordArt is a work of art in its own right and is designed as such each year. More than 200 international artists, selected by a jury, present a comprehensive panorama of contemporary art. Each individual work not only speaks for itself but also creates new perspectives when seen juxtaposed against the unique backdrop offered by the Carlshütte

and the adjacent historical sculpture park. NordArt is accompanied by concerts, readings, film presentations and other cultural events. Visit the exhibition's website at ... http://www.kunstwerk-carlshuette.de

San Francisco, CA.- Immediately following the end of World War II in 1945, airlines and passengers benefited from a surplus of inexpensive, advanced propeller-driven transport aircraft, or "propliners." Over the next fifteen years, commercial aviation expanded rapidly as airlines persistently requested improved propliner designs to lower costs, attract new customers, and gain advantages over competitors. In meeting these demands the manufacturers of North America and Europe developed increasingly superior aircraft. These included the jet-powered turboprop airliners that flew successively faster, higher, and farther.

MoMA PS1 Presents the First Large-Scale Museum Exhibition of Ryan Treacartin's Work

New YorkM City.- MoMA PS1 presents the first large-scale museum exhibition in New York of work by the artist Ryan Trecartin. "Ryan Trecartin: Any Ever" fills seven galleries with sculptural theater installations that house projections of the seven movies comprising Trecartin's most recent body of work, "Any Ever" (2009–2010). The exhibition is on view in the First Floor Main Galleries from June 19th through September 3rd.

Trecartin's distinctive cinematic and sculptural language — developed through a close synergy with his primary collaborator, Lizzie Fitch—continues a tradition of art that heralds, shapes, and challenges the defining technologies and cultural advances of the era. Consistent with his work to date, "Any Ever" explores emergent concepts of identity, narrative, language, and visual culture through darkly jubilant, frenetic formal experimentations. Shot in Miami, Florida, and made with contributors ranging from friends and artists to child actors and reality-television performers, "Any Ever" comprises seven autonomous but interrelated videos. The work is structured as a diptych, with "Trill-ogy Comp" (three movies) as one section and "Re'Search Wait'S" (four movies) as the other. Taken together, these videos embark on poetic, formal, and structural elaborations of new forms of technology, language, narrative, identity, and humanity, portraying an extra-dimensional world that channels the existential dramas of our own. The individual videos fit together in shifting combinations, with "Any Ever"'s master narrative chosen by each viewer.

MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, MoMA PS1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, MoMA PS1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. MoMA PS1 achieves this mission by presenting its diverse program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. MoMA PS1 presents over 50 exhibitions each year, including artists' retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, arts from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming.

MoMA PS1 was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc., an organization devoted to organizing exhibitions in underutilized and abandoned spaces across New York City. In 1976, it opened the first major exhibition in its permanent location in Long Island City, Queens, with the seminal 'Rooms' exhibition. An invitation for artists to transform the building's unique spaces, Rooms established the MoMA PS1 tradition of transforming the building's spaces into site-specific art that continues today with long-term installations by James Turrell, Keith Sonnier, Richard Serra, Lawrence Weiner, and others.

For the next twenty years, the building was used as studio, performance, and exhibition spaces, in support of artists from around the world. After a building-wide renovation, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (now MoMA PS1) reopened in 1997, confirming its position as the leading contemporary art center in New York. True to the building's history and form, the renovation preserved much of the original architecture as well as most of its unique classroom-sized galleries.

In 2000, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center became an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art to extend the reach of both institutions, and combine MoMA PS1's contemporary mission with MoMA's strength as one of the greatest collecting museums of modern art. 2010 marked the completed merger of the two institutions and celebrates P.S.1's new and exciting chapter as MoMA PS1.

A true artistic laboratory, MoMA PS1 aspires to maintain its diverse and innovative activities to continue to bring contemporary art to international audiences. Visit the museum's website at ... http://ps1.org

Herb Kawainui Kane ~ Artist & Historian Treasure Of Hawai'i ~ Dies At 82

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:48 PM PDT

Honolulu (SF Chronicle). - The art of Herb Kawainui Kane is synonymous with the renaissance of Hawaiian culture, and both have become ubiquitous to the point of sometimes being taken for granted, which is ironic, considering that ignorance and neglect of Hawaiian history and traditions was a prime motivator of Kane's authoritative illustrations and powerful paintings. Kane was the obvious choice to design the 2009 U.S. stamp marking the 50th anniversary of Hawai'i statehood. But now with the sad news of the death of Kane, 82, on Tuesday 8th March, the appreciation for his art, and its role in the revival of the culture he celebrated, is rightfully on the rise. As the Honolulu Star-Advertiser obituary notes, his official Web site cites Kane as saying, "If my work contributes to our comprehension of Hawai'i's past, that will ultimately become the greatest reward."
