Beverly Hills, CA
-- Seems as though there's no shortage of historic Michael Jacksonmemorabilia to be sold on the auction block.  The late King of Pop's iconic red and black "Thriller" jacket, which he wears throughout that song's video, will be offered to the public during a two-day sale at Julien's Auctions Gallery in Beverly Hills June 25 and 26.

The jacket, which is autographed by MJ on the sleeve, is expected to fetch between $200,000 and $400,000 dollars at the sale.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Shambala Preserve, where Michael's two Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, have lived since he left Neverland Ranch in 2006.

The jacket isn't the only MJ item offered for sale in this auction. One of his stage-worn fedoras is expected to bring two to four thousand bucks, while a wig he wore during the press conference where he announced his This Is It series of concerts, which never took place, is estimated to bring four to six thousand bucks.  An original signed sketch is estimated at two to three thousand dollars, and a glove Michael wore at the American Music Awards could bring from 20 to 30 thousand dollars.

London
- On June 8, Parasol unit foundation will preview a solo exhibition dedicated to the Polish artist Jakub Julian Ziolkowski. Ziolkowski's paintings are a wild hallucinatory journey into his strange and often frightening universe. Skeletons battle soldiers in murky swamps; towers of eyeballs goggle cartoonishly; flesh peels wetly off bare bones. Ziolkowski has an unflinching attitude to the corporeal: the body takes centre stage, at once defiled and dissected. On public view 9 June through 29 July.

TAROUDANT, MOROCCO.- He had the gift of perceiving reality and translate it onto the canvas, with its lights and shadows, to the extent that many called him "the master of light". Considered the most prestigious Chilean painter alive, Claudio Bravo moved to Southern Morocco 39 years ago, where he died Saturday night at age 74. Early reports indicated that his death had been caused by an attack of epilepsy, an illness that had been recently detected. But his friend and gallerist, Ana Maria Stagno, who manages the exhibition of his work in Chile, said Bravo suffered two heart attacks that caused his death.

The Kunsthal Rotterdam Shows a Selection of Philip Akkerman's Unique Self-Portraits

artwork: Philip Akkerman - "Self-portrait No. 31", 2009 - Oil on panel - 40 x 34 cm. Courtesy the artist. On view at the Kunsthal Rotterdam in "Akkermania".

Roterdam, NL.- The Kunsthal Rotterdam proudly presents "Akkermania", an exhibition illustrating the infinite variety to be found in the work of Dutch painter Philip Akkerman. In 1981, Akkerman decided to paint self-portraits, and over the last thirty years he has built up an oeuvre of almost three thousand paintings, no two of which are alike. With over four hundred pieces, this exhibition illustrates the incredible diversity of his work. The Kunsthal invited eleven different collectors to present their entire 'Akkerman Collections' in Akkermania. For the first time ever, visitors will be able to see Akkerman's intriguing oeuvre through the eyes of these collectors. "Akkermania" is on view until 26th June.

As well as choosing to paint only self-portraits, Philip Akkerman has set himself an increasing number of constraints over the years. He only uses three formats for his portraits (27 x 25 cm, 40 x 34 cm and 50 x 43 cm), and after several unencumbered years, decided in 1985 to paint exclusively in oils and tempera on prepared panels using the techniques of the Old Masters. These fixed rules provide the artist with an interesting field of play; once the lines have been drawn, play can begin, because countless questions still remain.

In 2007, Akkerman wrote the following to one of the collectors: "...The depiction of the skin, the importance of style, the origin and the conclusion of painting, are there any rules, how serious must or may a painting be, the importance of true likeness, of technique, chaos, uncertainty and doubt ... and much, much more, but most importantly who or what am I?"

artwork: Philip Akkerman - "Self-portrait No. 31", 2005 - Oil on panel 40 x 34 cm. - Courtesy the artist. On view until 26th June.

Many major collections, both in the Netherlands and further afield, include work by Philip Akkerman. The eleven collectors were asked to lend the Kunsthal every one of their Akkerman pieces, and every complete collection tells it own story. One collector buys a single painting every year while another purchases a chronological series in one go. With over 250 paintings, the Caldic Collection comprises the largest number of Akkerman self portraits and supplements their collection with a new painting every year. Other collectors such as Hauser & Wirth choose to purchase a single powerful series of portraits, whilst J. Zondt consistently opts for paintings that are 'strange' and divergent. "Akkermania" illustrates the infinite variety in the work of Philip Akkerman as seen through eleven pairs of eyes.

The Kunsthal Rotterdam stages some 25 exhibitions a year. The Kunsthal presents culture in the widest sense of the word: old art, new art, design, photography - from elitist to popular. The Kunsthal frequently experiments with themes which in many cases provide the first impulse for an exhibition. This approach has resulted in an exciting and varied exhibition repertoire highlighting Impressionism, lingerie, Leonardo da Vinci, Blackfoot Indians, Jewels of the Orient, Pop-art. More than 3300 square metres of exhibition space are available in the striking building designed by Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas - a work of art in its own right, making a visit to the Kunsthal well worth your while. artwork: Maurice Prendergast - Umbrellas in the Rain, 1899 - 35.4 x 53 cm. / This painting depicts a scene in Venice (Italy) at the marble bridge, Ponte della Paglia

HOUSTON.- Prendergast in Italy, the first exhibition devoted entirely to the watercolors, monotypes, and oil paintings by the American modern artist Maurice Prendergast, will open at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on February 14, 2010. Featuring more than 60 views of Venice, Rome, Siena, and Capri, Prendergast in Italy also includes the artist´s personal sketchbooks, letters, photographs, and guidebooks from his two trips to Italy, in 1898 and 1911. Prendergast was born and raised in Boston but developed his mature style during early trips abroad to France (1891-1895) and Italy (1989-1989). Renowned for his paintings full of joie de vivre, the view of Italy that Prendergast presents was informed by European trends filtered through the eyes of an American artist and tourist encountering Venice for the first time. This exhibition demonstrates the advances of abstract color and form that put Prendergast on the cutting edge of American modernism.

LONDON - This first exhibition ever mounted of Flemish paintings in the Royal Collection brings together 51 works from the 15th to 17th centuries, including masterpieces by Hans Memling, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan Brueghel, Van Dyck and Rubens. He was linked to the early 'Design Laboratory' classes of Alexey Brodovitch, and was a key member of the close knit group of photographers now celebrated as 'The New York School'. On view 14 January through 23 February, 2010.

New York (BWW News Desk).- The exhibition Impressions from South Africa, 1965 to Now, drawn entirely from the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, brings together nearly 100 prints, posters, books, and wall stencils by approximately 30 artists and collectives from the collection of The Museum of Modern Art that demonstrate the unusual reach, range, and impact of printmaking in South Africa during and after a period of political upheaval. From the earliest print, a 1965 linoleum cut by Azaria Mbatha, to screenprinted posters created during the height of the antiapartheid movement, to recent works by a younger generation that investigate a multiplicity of formats in the wake of apartheid, these works are striking examples of printed art as a tool for social, political, and personal expression. The exhibition is on view from March 23 to August 14, 2011. Among the artists included are Bitterkomix, Kudzanai Chiurai, Sandile Goje, William Kentridge, Senzeni Marasela, John Muafangejo, Cameron Platter, Claudette Schreuders, and Sue Williamson, with the majority of works and artists on view for the first time at MoMA and many for the first time within a U.S. museum. Madrid’s Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza Presents A Retrospective Devoted to Jean-Léon Gérome

Madrid, Spain -  A major retrospective of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) opened on 15th February 2011 at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and can be seen until 22nd May 2011. Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of the most famous and commercially successful French painters of his day. In the course of his long career, he was the subject of bitter controversy and criticism, in particular for defending the genre conventions of the waning academic style painting, under attack by realists and impressionists. However, Gérôme not was so much an heir to the academic tradition as the creator of totally new pictorial worlds, based on iconographic subjects. Historical painting, painting stories, painting everything ~ that was Gérôme's great passion. He intrigued the public with historical values and constant interplay of genres, blended in an aesthetic of collage and rearrangement. His skill in creating images, in presenting an illusion of reality through artifice and subterfuge went hand in hand with perfectly finished paintings that were themselves, imperfect. As a very unorthodox academic painter, Gérôme knew how to represent history as a dramatic spectacle and, by creating particularly convincing images, could make the spectator an eyewitness to events ranging from classical antiquity to the latest news.

Photographer Lee Friedlander's New Book ~ "America by Car"

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 08:11 PM PDT

artwork: Lee Friedlander - Route 9W, New York, 1969 - Gelatin Silver Print - Copyright the Artist

NEW YORK, NY.- Enduring icons of American culture, the car and the highway remain vital as auguries of adventure and discovery, and a means by which to take in the country's vast scale. Lee Friedlander is the first photographer to make the car an actual "form" for making photographs. Driving across most of the country's 50 states in an ordinary rental car, Friedlander applied the brilliantly simple conceit of deploying the sideview mirror, rearview mirror, the windshield and the side windows as a picture frame within which to record the country's eccentricities and obsessions at the turn of the century. This method allows for fascinating effects in foreshortening, and wonderfully telling juxtapositions in which steering wheels, dashboards and leatherette bump up against roadside bars, motels, churches, monuments, suspension bridges, landscapes and often Friedlander's own image, via sideview mirror shots.
