The Renowned Danish Museum of Art & Design In Copenhagen Is Toured By Our Editor Posted: 11 Dec 2010 07:35 PM PST The Danish Museum of Art & Design (formerly, Danish Museum of Decorative Art; Danish: Kunstindustrimuseet) is the museum in Copenhagen that houses collections of Danish and international design and crafts. It features works of famous Danish designers like Arne Jacobsen, Jacob Jensen and Kaare Klint, who was one of the two architects who remodeled the former Frederiks Hospital (built 1752–57), one of Copenhagen's finest rococo buildings, into a museum, in the 1926. This edifice was built in 1752-57 to designs by the architects Niels Eigtved and Lauritz de Thurah. The Ny Carlsberg Foundation has made donations to the museum throughout the last century. Right from the start the main purpose of the museum has been to disseminate a concept of quality within design. Through the display of the exemplary objects it was hoped to raise the standards among the products of Danish industry. The collections serves as a source of inspiration for people active in industry. The museum's collections, library and archives constitute a central resource centre for the study of design and its history in Denmark. The museum brings together and documents the contemporary developments within industrial design, decorative and applied arts. The collection of exemplary works from older "areas" and periods, which are closely related to contemporary oeuvres. The museum undertakes research into the history of art and design, taking as its point of departure of its collections, and presents the results in exhibitions, publications and educational material etc. The museum houses the biggest library for design in Scandinavia. It also hosts a fully annotated and illustrated database of all furniture made in Denmark from 1900 to 2008, originally compiled by Reese and Marilyn Palley and later donated to and further developed by the museum. Danish design is known worldwide and displays include furniture, appliance design, silverware and glass. A permanent exhibition presents 20th-century Design and Craft and the museum boasts a collection of European craft from the Middle Ages until the present time, including art and craft from Japan and China. Textiles include dresses from Japan and Danish embroidery. The Poster Collection reflects the artistic and commercial development within the history of poster art, both in Denmark and abroad. It includes Danish posters from previous centuries, coming right up to the present day. The artists are numerous and the range of subjects is considerable: e.g. posters with a political or commercial purpose, posters advertising exhibitions, concerts, film and theatre together with those aimed at tourists. In addition there is the collection of rare foreign posters by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chéret, Mucha, Cassandre, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Russian revolutionary posters, as well as Polish and Italian posters from the era of fascism, Japanese and American art posters etc. The museum disseminates central lines of development within the history of design. In the new exhibition of 20th century Danish applied arts and industrial design, the history of Danish design is seen in the light of the period's aesthetic discussions and social, technical and economic conditions around central figures like Poul Henningsen, Kaare Klint and Arne Jacobsen, design and architecture are brought together in the museum's interpretation of the century's dreams and reality. The historical collections of European and Asiatic applied arts and decorative arts include major works within Chinese ceramics, French and German porcelain industries of the 18th century, and English and French furniture. In the informative displays, emphasis is put on the significance of these collections for developments in Denmark. The Print and Drawing collection aims to supplement and expand the museum's holdings and its field of study. It consists principally of original drawings and preparatory sketches on paper for applied arts and design, graphic designs on paper (labels, book jackets, record covers, packaging, playing cards) by Danish and foreign artists, including a small Russian collection. There also photographs of applied art, both for documentation purposes and as art in its own right as well as Japanese woodcuts and book production, together with Chinese graphics and calligraphy. European ornamental prints especially from the 16th and 17th centuries are also on display. The collection includes drawings by such artists as G.F. Hetsch, Constantin Hansen, Johan Rohde, Joakim Skovgaard, Thorvald Bindesbøll, Finn Juhl, Poul Kjærholm, Bernadotte & Bjørn, Jacob Jensen, Jan Trägårdh, Bjørn Nørgaard and Vibeke Klint. Danish industrial graphics is another large field, and is here represented with works by such figures as Thorvald Bindesbøll, Knud V. Engelhardt, Kay Fisker, Gunnar Biilmann-Petersen, Claus Achton Friis, Erik Ellegaard Frederiksen. The Textile and Dress Collection is one of the country's largest and finest, its most impressive examples being drawn from most areas of textile art from the Renaissance to the present day. The largest sub-groups are those of Danish embroidery, weaving and textile printing from the 20th century. The costume collection consists of some 850 complete costumes, mainly women's, as well as hats, shoes, bags and other accessories, the emphasis here being on the 20th century. The collection includes tapestries, French and Italian silk fabrics, rustic weaving and embroidery from all over the world, lace from various periods, batik, ikat weaving as well as Chinese and Japanese textiles. The museum keeps a large number of its extensive collections of applied and decorative art and industrial design in secure storage. Anyone wishing to study the various groups of holdings, e.g. glass, ceramics, metal, furniture or appliance design from these collections should apply in writing to the museum. Visit Website:_ http://www.kunstindustrimuseet.dk/en The museum has specialized exhibitions and until March 6th 2011 it is showing the most remarkable pieces of its collection. "The Best from 100 years (1910-2010)" has been selected by Danish Museum of Art & Design from the 600 works bought by the museum with funds from the Society of Friends. The common factor that links them is that each in its own way represents a new departure in decorative art and design. For the Danish Museum of Art & Design it is important to ensure continuity of the cultural concept and to communicate the value of good design and decorative art – both in the past and now. That is also the purpose of this exhibition. According to the museum's director, Bodil Busk Laursen if Danish design is to live on into the future it is important to maintain the special sense for the physical context that is characteristic of the Danish design culture. The "Society of friends" of the museum was set up in 1910, and was the first museum support association in the Nordic region. In the first 75 years it was earlier decorative art works from Europe and China that were acquired for the funds provided by the "Friends". In the last 25 years the museum has increasingly used their support to purchase works of modern art and design from present-day Danish artists and designers. The donations from the "Friends" are thus a source of pleasure for the visitors to the museum and also for the benefit of the practicing artists. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Friends a book is now published, written by art historian Charlotte Christensen. The book documents the development of collecting activity in the Danish Museum of Art & Design, and shows the wealth and scope of the collections. The one hundredth anniversary is a good occasion for presenting a selection of 100 donations received by the museum as a result of support from its "Society of Friends". The innovative work of the Italian furniture designer Gaetano Pesce would be present in the exhibition. Pesce is one of the most independent thinkers in the international design scene. Probably best described as an artist-designer, Gaetano Pesce has always pursued a policy of emphasizing the individuality of the object. He succeeds in individualizing serial designs by using materials such as acrylic resin and silicone, which, in the manufacturing process, still leave something up to chance. As a result, the uniqueness of a product designed by Gaetano Pesce is not defined by such abstract conceptions as beauty but is deliberately left with flaws and can even seem shapeless. In 1968 Gaetano Pesce developed "Up", a line in seat furniture for B&B Italia. These pieces, also described by Gaetano Pesce as transformational furniture, are made of polyurethane foam. They were not sold as "finished" furniture but instead were marketed pressed flat and vacuum-packed in blister packs. Not until the piece was taken home and removed from its packaging did it assume form as an armchair, sofa, or footstool when the polyurethane foam had absorbed enough air from its surroundings. His ball shape ottoman forms part of the exhibit. Pieces from the inventor of the European porcelain, the German Johann Friedrich Böttger are also on display. The famous "Piggy Suit" of avant-garde Danish designer Henrik Vibskov was also chosen to be in "The Best from 100 years". The Danish Museum of Art & Design captures the essence of the new and the old under one roof.
