The Weserburg Museum of Modern Art In Bremen, Germany Is Toured By Our Editor Posted: 27 Dec 2010 08:00 PM PST The Weserburg Museum of Modern Art is Bremen's museum of modern art _ one of the largest museums in Germany with an international reputation _ is located in the middle of the Weser River in the heart of this Hanseatic city. The institution does not only consider itself in the middle of the river geographically: constantly alternating presentations of works from famous private collections as well as special exhibitions show the dynamic development of modern art from the sixties to the present. A supporting program consisting of weekly guided tours, concerts, lectures, performances, discussions with artists, and film screenings make the Weserburg one of the liveliest place of fine art in town. The idea for a collector's museum, an institution in which the collector is not only the lender but a committed mediator of modern art, was implemented for the first time in Europe in Bremen, a concept that clearly sets the Weserburg apart from traditional art museums. Various focuses have been selected from several German collections that provide insight into the world of art that is as personal as it is diverse. The private collector's individual passion for art is combined with the scholarly eye of the museum in the special atmosphere of this historic building. In an impressive tour, visitors do not follow a path alongside art-historical developments, rather they follow dialogues between the individual works of art. The appeal lies in the interaction between the individual private collections. When strolling through the exhibition spaces, the juxtaposition and coexistence of different collection concepts under one roof enables experiencing contemporary art from ever new, in part surprising angles of vision. Since it opened in 1991, the Weserburg Museum has presented art from a number of private European collections, which enables viewers to perceive the spirited variety of contemporary art in a special way. Unlike public institutions, as art lovers, private collectors are only committed to their own preferences. By pursuing their personal ideas and passions, collections are created with an unmistakable character of their own. While one collector systematically follows the work of an artist over decades or is particular enthusiastic about a single art movement, another is constantly on a quest for certain themes and motifs or aims at a dialogue between different artistic stances. In this way, the Weserburg creates a space in which divergent perspectives can encounter each other and be discussed publicly. The museum has been working closely with most of the collectors for many years. This has resulted in a mutual trust that allows presenting the various aspects of the collections to an interested audience in large-scale special exhibitions and smaller presentations. On September 6, 1991, the New Museum Weserburg Bremen opened its doors under the directorship of Thomas Deecke. The museum was an absolute novelty in Europe. It was the first time that the concept of a collector's museum has been implemented in which the permanent exhibition consisted exclusively of works from private lenders. Thomas Deecke's extraordinary commitment was pivotal in the long-term securing of several outstanding collections from both Germany and abroad. Works of contemporary art have since been presented in numerous exhibitions and collection presentations on 6,000 square meters of exhibition space. We can look back on successful exhibitions such as Die Kunst und das schöne Ding (1995), Picasso, Guston, Miró, De Konnning (1997), or Fondation Maeght: Südliche Kunst unter nordischen Himmel (2003). In addition, many of the exhibitions developed by curators from the Weserburg have been shown by well-known international museums. The museum's exhibition Minimal Maximal (1999), for example, toured via Spain all the way to Japan and Korea. After 1945 in the ensuing years, the cultural scene seized a large bomb damaged building. Artists set up studios, and the Mockstheater and the Städtische Galerie found new space. The building accommodated a total of more than twenty cultural and social facilities. The GAK—Gesellschaft für aktuelle Kunst (Society for Contemporary Art), founded in 1980, was also housed here. During one of their exhibitions—the presentation of works by Edward Kienholz from the Onnasch Collection—the idea was born to establish a collector's museum for Bremen. It was a number of years, however, before it could be implemented. The bridge to the future: On November 14, 1988, the decision was passed by the Citizenship of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen Municipality to found the New Museum Weserburg Bremen. The founding members were the City of Bremen, the Kunstverein in Bremen, as well as the collectors Hans Grothe, Anna and Gerhard Lenz, Reinhard Onnasch, and Hartmut Ackermeier. Architect Wolfram Dahms drew up the plans for the conversion of the building complex. Carsten Ahrens has been director of the museum since November 1, 2005. Under his leadership, with solo exhibitions of works by Jörg Immendorff (2007) and Helmut Newton (2008), the Weserburg has opened up to a broader public. And in the future as well, the museum will pursue the goal of attracting an interested public for itself and for Bremen by showing ambitious collection presentations, theme exhibitions, and retrospectives of the important artists of our time. The museum's current exhibition is "Masterpieces of the Kunsthalle Bremen" on view until January, 2011. Exhibited is part of the works of art galleries is from the 19th Century, such as the two famous sculptures by Auguste Rodin , The Age of Bronze , 1875/76 and John the Baptist, 1878/80 . The latter gets equal upon entering the floor in striking contrast - or is it a deep dialogue and thus one thing in common - with the photo series Time exposed by Hiroshi Sugimoto. A landscape painting by Caspar David Friedrich The grave of the Arminius, corresponding to 1813 - as in the Kunsthalle before - with his perfect photographic translation from 2007 in an LED Lightbox Hiroyuki Masuyama. It seems as if the artist of his camera during a journey on the spot have been with to design on the hard drive to capture the history. In another room, there are more works by different artists on an exciting dialogue. Including the Great Gallery, 1995/97 by Boris Becker, a photographic work that impressive once the old sculpture hall of the Kunsthalle calls to mind yet. Of course, do not forget to Maurizio Cattelan's outstanding "Hollywood" and equally bizarre version of the Bremen Town Musicians Love Saves Life, 1995 and Love Lasts Forever, 1999, which here as lifelike stuffed animal preparations completely skeletonized version of its highly stacked next to us are facing. Also a subtle comment, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Hanseatic City of Bremen, home to the Weserburg and the Kunsthalle Bremen.

There she is again, lying on her back in a feathered dress, and in close up, her hair and face sleek with oil. A stirring photo spread in the August issue of Vogue Italia was inspired by the Gulf oil spill, leaving readers wondering if the magazine crossed from evocative to insensitive. Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani understands the debate stretching from blogosphere to beaches and said the motivation is straightforward. "The message is to be careful about nature," she said by telephone from Milan, Italy. "Just to take care more about nature. ... I understand that it could be shocking to see and to look in this way these images."

When the relationship between the two systems is harmonious, the essence of each system remains intact within the newly unified form. Given an abrasive commingling, the systems pierce into or rip through each other integrally fusing, entwining, and or mutating while obliterating old and punctuating new connection points and abscesses. "At the intersection of two differing systems there is a usually a disruption, often violent and sudden in nature (hiccup, sneeze, orgasm, coronary failure), or occasionally slow and deliberate (tumor, virus).
