San Diego Museum of Art Opens Great Spanish Masters from the Pérez Simón Collection Posted: 09 Jul 2011 12:38 AM PDT SAN DIEGO, CA.- The San Diego Museum of Art is the only U.S. museum to show From El Greco to Dalí: Great Spanish Masters from the Pérez Simón Collection. This spectacular survey of Spanish art from the 16th century to the 1970s features 64 works drawn from one of the world's finest private collections, on view from July 9th to November 6th. From the golden age of Charles V and on through the modern period, this exhibition showcases such acclaimed masters of the Spanish school as El Greco, Ribera, Murillo, Goya, Sorolla, Picasso, Dalí and Miró. Spanning five centuries, this selection of works by some of the world's most celebrated artists illustrates a splendid chapter in the history of Spanish art. Visitors to the exhibition are also invited to discover dazzling artists little-known in the U.S., such as the Romantic Manuel Barrón y Carrillo, or the Modernist Romero de Torres. This exhibition proposes new perspectives on the story of Spanish art, considered both thematically and historically. An outstanding selection of old master paintings underscore the importance of religious piety and royal patronage from the 16th to the 18th century, including Jusepe de Ribera's sensational Saint Jerome, Bartolomé Murillo's sublime Immaculate Conception, and Francisco de Goya's masterful Doña María Teresa de Vallabriga y Rozas. The struggle between tradition and modernity is considered from the late-18th to the 20th century, featuring six works by Salvador Dalí, among them his monumental Ascension of Christ, and the diptych Gala's Christ, painted for his wife and muse in 1978. Monuments of painting, the masterpieces assembled for this exhibition are also a testament to a preeminent collector's enduring passion. The San Diego Museum of Art, the region's oldest, largest and most visited art museum, provides a rich and diverse cultural experience for almost 250,000 visitors annually. Located in the heart of beautiful Balboa Park, the Museum's nationally renowned permanent collection includes Spanish and Italian old masters, South Asian paintings, and 19th- and 20th-century American paintings and sculptures. Visit : http://www.sdmart.org/ A native of Asturias, Spain, Juan Antonio Pérez Simón has made Mexico City his home. It is also home to his collection, begun in the 1970s, which now ranks among the greatest in the world. From El Greco to Dalí: Great Spanish Masters from the Pérez Simón Collection, a choice selection from the outstanding works that comprise this stellar collection, premiered in Paris, at the Musée Jacquemart-André, before traveling to the Musée national des beaux-arts in Québec City. Aesthetic rigor and the careful selection of works, as well as the unique personality and tastes of the Collection's owner are the characteristics that define the Pérez Simón Collection. Among its particular traits are the clear interest in female beauty, nature, scenes from daily life that juxtapose earthly pleasures with the ephemeral nature of existence as found in still lifes, and a fascination with the use of light and color, principally in the transition from Academic painting to modern art. |

Daniel Blau Ltd. Presents Neal Fox's Latest Project 'Beware of the God' Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:00 PM PDT LONDON.- Daniel Blau Ltd. presents Neal Fox's latest project 'Beware of the God'. Fox's drawings depict a phantasmagoric journey through the detritus and mythology of pop culture. From a life-long obsession with the tales of his dead grandfather, a World War II bomber pilot, writer and hell raiser, his large- scale drawings have developed into increasingly layered celebrations of the debauched and iconoclastic characters whose ideas have helped shape our collective consciousness. The exhibition is on display from July 8th through August 13th. |

The Art Museum of Estonia Shows Pavel Filonov and the Russian Avant-Garde Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:07 PM PDT Tallinn, Estonia.- The Art Museum of Estonia is proud to present "Pavel Filonov and the Russian Avant-Garde', on view in the Kumu museum's great hall until September 18th. The exhibition Pavel Filonov. The Russian Avant-Garde and Afterwards is based on the collections of the State Russian Museum. In addition to Filonov's oeuvre, the display includes works of art by the representatives of other trends in the Russian avant-garde, as well as examples of social realism. The exhibition is accompanied by a wonderfully illustrated catalogue in Estonian, Russian and English. "The exhibition focuses on the work of Pavel Filonov, one of the most exceptional and unique masters of the Russian avant-garde in the first half of the 20th century, in a wider context," says the coordinator of the exhibition Elnara Taidre. "Filonov can be compared to the key figures of the Russian avant-garde, Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich; his uniqueness, however, is visible in the synthesis of the legacy of the Academy and a new art language." The display has been compiled in cooperation with the State Russian Museum, whose collections hold the majority of Filonov's legacy, and the best part of the Russian avant-garde. "I am extremely pleased that this first major cooperation project with the State Russian Museum after the regaining of independence has been realised," said Anu Liivak, the director of Kumu. "I visited the first retrospective of Filonov at the State Russian Museum about 25 years ago, and ever since I have dreamt of a chance to introduce his work in Estonia. Filonov lived in an interesting, but difficult time. The exhibition offers museum-goers a unique opportunity to experience this controversial and tragic era through contemporary works of art." Filonov's works on display at Kumu include the significant paintings "Feast of Kings" and "Formula of Spring", as well as works from the series Formulae and Heads. A general context is created with the works of the Russian avant-garde masters Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky and Natalia Goncharova, which are supplemented by the paintings of several other interesting artists, such as David Burliuk, Mikhail Matyushin and Pavel Filonov's pupils. As a contrast to experimental art, works that are part of the anti-innovation canon of social realism will be on display, including the oeuvre of Stalin's court artist Isaac Brodsky, and the huge collective painting by Yuri Kugach, Wassily Nechitailo and Viktor Tsyplakov entitled Glory to the Great Stalin! (3.5 × 5.25 m). The artist, art theorist and creator of the system of analytical art Pavel Filonov (1882/1883–1941) examined in his oeuvre the invisible processes in visible things in an attempt to show the structure of living matter to the observer. In 1925, he founded the group "Masters of Analytical Art". Filonov, his family and students were persecuted because he never became a supporter of social realism, and his works were not allowed to be exhibited until the perestroika era. The artist was "rediscovered" in Russia and in the West in the 1980s. Nowadays, he is considered a classic of 20th-century art, and his works are exhibited all over the world. The Art Museum of Estonia was founded on November 17th, 1919, but it was not until 1921 that it got its first permanent building – the Kadriorg Palace, built in the 18th century. In 1929 the palace was expropriated from the Art Museum in order to rebuild it as the residence of the President of Estonia. The Art Museum of Estonia was housed in several different temporary spaces, until it moved back to the palace in 1946. In September, 1991 the Kadriorg Palace was closed, because it had totally deteriorated by then. At the end of the year the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia decided to guarantee the construction of a new building for the Art Museum of Estonia in Kadriorg. Until then the Knighthood House at Toompea Hill served as the temporary main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. The exhibition there was opened on April 1, 1993. Art Museum of Estonia premanently closed down the exhibitions in that building in October 2005. At the end of the 1970s and the 1980s the first branches of the Art Museum of Estonia were founded. Starting from 1995 all the branches offered different educational programmes for children and young people. In summer 2000 the restored Kadriorg Palace was opened, but not as the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia, but as a branch. Kadriorg Art Museum now exhibits the foreign art collection of the Art Museum of Estonia. At present there are five active branches of the Art Museum of Estonia: Kadriorg Art Museum (Kadriorg Palace and Mikkel Museum), Niguliste Museum, Adamson-Eric Museum, and Kumu Art Museum (the new main building of the Art Museum of Estonia). For the first time during its nearly 100-year-old history, the Art Museum of Estonia has a building that both meets the museum's requirements and is worthy of Estonian art in its collections. Kumu Art Museum is a multifunctional art museum that includes exhibition halls, an auditorium that offers diverse possibilities, and an education centre for children and art lovers of all ages. The Baroque Art of Italy in the Royal Collection opens in November Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:49 PM PDT LONDON.- The drama of the Baroque comes to Edinburgh in part two of The Art of Italy in the Royal Collection. The 31 paintings and 43 drawings selected for the exhibition reflect the great stylistic diversity of the period, which gave birth to the powerful realism of Caravaggio, the revolutionary naturalism of the Carracci and the cool classicism of Poussin and Domenichino. Highlights of the exhibition include two works by Caravaggio, The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew and Boy Peeling Fruit, both previously thought to be copies of lost originals. Recent research by Royal Collection curators and conservators has resulted in the re-attribution of these paintings, which are now generally recognised by experts as by the master himself. |
The Phantasmagorical World of Photographer Marco Sanges at Hay Hill Gallery Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:48 PM PDT LONDON.- This summer, the Hay Hill Gallery brings a sense of the surreal to Cork Street and presents Big Scenes, the visionary and extraordinary world of award-winning photographer Marco Sanges. Big Scenes combines photography, video and performance, bringing together larger than life characters and stories to play out a world of fantasy, grandeur and drama. Big Scenes is a dreamlike, decadent world reminiscent of Surrealism and the visual and performing arts of the glamorous golden age of the 1920s and 30s. The artist Gavin Turk commented: "Marco Sanges's art is like going to a theatre through different doors, characters in photos come to life in various forms of tableaux vivant". On view 19 July through 11 September. |
Galerie Gabriel Rolt in Amsterdam Exhibits 'Ryan McGinley: Somewhere Place' Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:47 PM PDT Amsterdam.- Galerie Gabriel Rolt is delighted to present a new series of works by acclaimed American photographer Ryan McGinley. This will be his second solo exhibition in The Netherlands, following on from the 2007 exhibition at FOAM. 'Ryan McGinley: Somewhere Place' will be on show from April 9th to May 14th 2011, with an opening reception on Saturday 9 April from 17.00 – 19.30 hrs. Youth, liberation and the joy of losing yourself in the moment are elements that feature throughout Ryan McGinley's work, from his early roots in documenting the urban adventures of his downtown Manhattan friends to his subsequent cross-country travels in utopian environments throughout America to his most recent studio portraits. McGinley's elaborate and rigorous process of photo-making creates moments of breathtaking beauty: naked feral kids poised in ecstatic abandon. The lack of clothing and other contemporary signifiers along with the archetypical landscapes give the photos a sense of timelessness in which the viewer can project his or her own story. |
