| Our Editor Tours The Magnificent Malmö Konsthall Museum In Malmö, Sweden Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:58 PM PST  In the Malmö Konsthall most of the gallery has a ceiling constructed like a latticework of 550 domes with both natural and artificial light sources. The height of the ceiling varies. The light well - with the higher ceiling - has a big sloping skylight towards the north. Klas Anshelm got inspiration for the construction when visiting the sculptor Constantin Brancusi in his Paris studio. The result is a gallery that is both functional and aesthetic. An exhibition space that presents the artist with endless possibilities. The Malmö Konsthall was renovated in 1994. At that time the exhibition hall and the adjacent older brick building known as Hantverkshuset (the Craft Building) were linked together. This created new spaces for a bookshop, restaurant, Hall C and space for children's activities as well as a smaller exhibition space called Mellanrummet (the In-between Space). Malmö Konsthall's primary mandate is to exhibit both international and national art ranging from the classics of modernism to current experiments. Over the years exhibitions have featured such artists as Munch, van Gogh, Kandinsky, Klee, Miró, Giacometti, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Louise Bourgeois, Peter Greenaway and Tony Cragg. The boundaries between the various art forms are kept fluid by associated special events: theatre, film, poetry, video installations, multimedia, music, lectures and debates. In conjunction with the exhibitions Malmö Konsthall organizes extensive educational activities for both children and adults. It is also possible to book private tours of current exhibitions. Each year Malmö Konsthall has around 400,000 visitors.The museum arranges exhibitions with an international focus which encompasses both the classics of modern art and current experiments.  The paintings, sculptures, installations etc. cover the major modern and contemporary movements and styles and are set against a background of natural and artificial light that gives the artist unlimited possibilities to present their art and visitors to view it. The gallery has many fascinating exhibitions and programmes year-round.
"Abstract Possible" is a research project which aims at exploring notions of abstraction, taking contemporary art as its starting point. It will develop in various locations over the course of two years, starting with a "trailer exhibition" in the project space of Malmö Konsthall 11 November 2010 – 16 January 2011. Clandestine, opaque, hermetic and abstract art are all buzzwords frequently used in discussions of contemporary art over the last decade. A plethora of examples of formal abstraction, both geometric and expressive, is visible in exhibitions, site-specific installations, publications, and other abstract projects.
Over the past decade, Malmö has undergone a most dramatic post-industrial transformation. This cosmopolitan city has "reclaimed" the seafront, where entire new city districts full of interesting modern architecture and bustling street life have been constructed. Of course, another radical change has been the mighty Öresund Bridge, opened in 2000, which connects Malmö with Denmark´s capital Copenhagen, just twenty minutes away. The region now forms a single metropolitan area; one of the most expansive, exciting and energetic in Northern Europe. Malmö is an ideal centre from to explore this new region and in less than one hour visitors can reach not only two major metropolises, but also a large number of historical and picturesque towns and villages, beautiful beaches and impressive castles, museums and cultural centers. PHILADELPHIA, PA - In 1907, the French painter Paul Cézanne's posthumous retrospective astonished younger artists, accelerating the experimentation of European modernism. Cézanne (1839-1906) became for Henri Matisse "a benevolent god of painting," and for Pablo Picasso "my one and only master." Cézanne's inclusion in the Armory Show in New York in 1913 also offered American artists a new direction. Cézanne & Beyond (February 26 through May 17, 2009) will examine the seismic shift provoked by this pivotal figure, examining him as form-giver, catalyst, and touchstone for artists who followed.  |

LONG BEACH, CA.- The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) joins the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (MACG), Mexico City, in presenting Siqueiros Paisajista / Siqueiros: Landscape Painter. This exhibition reveals the renowned Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros as a major landscape painter. The significance of the collaboration between MOLAA and the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil has been recognized by the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles who has made this exhibition an official part of its Mexico 2010 celebration which commemorates Mexico's Bicentennial of Independence and the Centennial of its Revolution. "It is a privilege to celebrate Mexico's Bicentennial with an exhibition of this caliber which reveals a lesser known side of one the great Mexican masters of 20th-century art," said Richard P. MORAGA, CA.- Hearst Art Gallery at Saint Mary's College will present California in Relief: A History in Wood and Linocut Prints, on view July 25 – September 13, 2009. California in Relief presents a historical survey of relief prints in Northern California. Relief prints include, woodcuts, linocuts and wood engravings. This exhibition traces the history of one printmaking media and by doing so brings to light both long standing artistic movements; fascinating groups of artists working outside the mainstream; as well as well known artists from across the last century. Art movements that focused on relief prints over the past century continue to have esthetic heirs working today. Important and influential artists who are often overlooked in the traditional art historical narrative created powerful prints that became part of the history of California. Significant numbers of women were pioneers in all the various traditions of relief prints. Influences from Japan and Mexico played an influential role in the development of different styles. The overall diversity of voices and imagery is held together in this exhibition by the unity of the technique which imparts a distinctive graphic quality to the work of artists today as it did in 1900.

NEW YORK (REUTERS).- The Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York, will exhibit portraits of women by American artist John Singer Sargent starting in May in what curators say is the first major exhibition of its kind. The exhibition will show 25 of Sargent's women from May 29 through to the end of the year. The exhibition will appear alongside the Fenimore's permanent collection of American Art housed in a scenic country home in Cooperstown, a small town about 200 miles north of New York City.  |

LOS ANGELES, CA - The theft of 10 silkscreen paintings by Andy Warhol has the Los Angeles Police Department searching for clues, but it has people in the art world scratching their heads, too. Why were just Warhols stolen, and not other more valuable art at the same location? Also what art thieves in their right mind would steal well known Warhols that are realistically un-marketable anywhere in the world ? "It's hard to say what they want to do with them, but it looks like somebody knew about these pieces," Detective Hrycyk said Saturday. He said that there was no sign of forced entry and that other valuable artwork and possessions had not been taken.  |

NEW YORK, NY.- The human form, disrobed and displayed in all its glory, is arguably the most enduring motif in the history of Western art. Museums dedicated to art both ancient and modern are filled with nudes rendered every which way: painted, chiseled, molded, sketched and photographed. They're just usually not living and breathing. But New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will host daily performances of five seminal works by Marina Abramović, three of which feature performers in the altogether. In Imponderabilia (1977), two players stand opposite each other, au naturel, in a narrow doorway. Visitors must brush past them to enter the exhibition—an early, if awkward, example of interactive art. On exhibition 14 March through 31 May, 2010. |

NASHVILLE, TN – Hailed as one of the most outstanding self-taught carvers of the 20th century, William Edmondson paved the way for many African American artists. Born in 1874 and raised south of Nashville in what is today Green Hills, Edmondson found his calling as a sculptor late in life. During the 1930s, his talents were recognized by art collectors and professionals; in 1937, he was the first African American to receive a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmondson is now considered one of the great artists of the Twentieth Century. On view through 3 January, 2010.  |
