The AKN Editor Tours The Most Unique Nordic Watercolour Museum In Sweden

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 08:26 PM PST

At the Nordic Watercolour Museum you can see the work of leading contemporary international watercolourists or study classical watercolour paintings of the past. The museum is one of the most exciting cultural projects in the Nordic countries. It serves as a Nordic center for contemporary art, for research and training, with the emphasis on exhibiting and teaching techniques of watercolour art. At the Nordic Watercolour Museum you can see the work of leading contemporary international watercolourists or study classical watercolour paintings of the past. You can choose to take a specialized course led by professional artists, try how it feels to paint alongside your own children or grandchildren in the children's studio, or prepare your own forthcoming exhibition in one of the guests studios. The main entrance to the museum is through a space between the building and the mainland cliffs that opens towards a nearby bay area. A wooden boardwalk along the museum leads to a secondary entrance on the waterside. From the foyer there is access to the main outward areas on the lower level: The exhibition halls, the restaurant and the assembly hall – placed so that the assembly hall can function separately as well as in connection with either the exhibition halls or the restaurant. The main building is two story's high with a varying sequence of one- and two-storey spaces facing the water, where the building is the lowest. The public functions – including the shop and children's studio – are primarily situated on the lower level, while the administration, classrooms, studios and a planned library are on the upper level where also the Swedish Riksteater/State Theatre has actors' dressing rooms. From the exhibition area, which offers a variety of subdivisions, there is visual contact with the research balcony, a gallery and workshops above the exhibition area. There are large windows in the exhibition halls facing the water, where daylight intensity and character can be regulated by exterior metal screens combined with interior adjustable screens. Besides these large windows there is a band of windows along the top of the walls, which allow reflections from the water on the ceiling. The five studio buildings on the museum's grounds are meant for Nordic artists who can live and work here for a period of time and make use of the museums educational and research facilities. The studios are each two story's high with a small balcony for sleeping. Windows are on three sides with a main orientation towards the sea. The museum's mission is to stimulate discussion of the potentials of watercolour and build awareness of how artists today, and yesterday, have exploited water and pigment in their work. To that end they explore watercolour from three points of view: traditional watercolour, watercolour as a medium of expression, and watercolour as an enduring concept.

In 1989 The Nordic Watercolour Association was formed, an society open for watercolorists from the Nordic countries. The aspiration was to found a Nordic watercolour museum to serve as forum for Nordic watercolour artists and for work, research and instruction in watercolour techniques, paper and paints. The Association inquired of some 40 local authorities up and down Sweden's west coast as to whether they were interested in collaborating in the project. More than 20 replied positively. The Association's plan was that the museum should be located in beautiful surroundings, near the sea and somewhere between Oslo and Copenhagen. In 1995 The island of Tjörn was selected as the site, on the water's edge in a charming archipelago among sea and rocks. The Association now enjoyed the support of an enthusiastic and go-ahead local authority, and collaborative work began to create a network including museum officials, researchers, knowledgeable and interested artists, teachers in visual arts and designers. The first step was to establish the project firmly among decision-makers at local authority, regional, national and Nordic levels. During this time ideas for the museum's range of activities developed further, and the programme for a Nordic architectural contest was presented. The Danish architects Niels Bruun and Henrik Corfitsen won the contest with their design "Mötet", thus concluding the largest Nordic architectural competition ever held (there were a total of 386 entries). The planning of the actual museum construction and of its activities could now commence. The setting up of the museum's sponsoring body - with the Nordic Watercolour Association and the Tjörn municipality as founder members - was completed with Professor Inez Svensson as chairperson. In the year 2000 the museum was inaugurated. The view from the restaurant is magnificent and here the glass facades are withdrawn to allow an exterior sitting area along the boardwalk ... a most unique museum.

LONDON.- The drama of the Baroque comes to Edinburgh in part two of The Art of Italy in the Royal Collection. The 31 paintings and 43 drawings selected for the exhibition reflect the great stylistic diversity of the period, which gave birth to the powerful realism of Caravaggio, the revolutionary naturalism of the Carracci and the cool classicism of Poussin and Domenichino. Highlights of the exhibition include two works by Caravaggio, The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew and Boy Peeling Fruit, both previously thought to be copies of lost originals. Recent research by Royal Collection curators and conservators has resulted in the re-attribution of these paintings, which are now generally recognised by experts as by the master himself.
