The Nationalmuseum ~ Sweden's Premier Museum Of Art & Design ~ Visited By Our Editor Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:06 PM PST The Nationalmuseum is Sweden's premier museum of art and design. The collections comprise older paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphic art, and applied art and design up to the present day. We have two main people to thank for the role and scope of collections today. One of them is Carl Gustaf Tessin, who during his time as ambassador in Paris in the 1740s, bought contemporary French art of the highest quality. The other is King Gustav III. After Gustav III's death in 1792 founded the Royal.Museum of the King's memory, where his collections were transferred into the public domain, and most are in the Nationalmuseum. The museum's collections of paintings and sculptures comprise some 26,000 works. Artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Renoir, Degas and Gauguin are represented, as are the Swedish artists Carl Larsson, Ernst Josephson, C F Hill and Anders Zorn. The collection includes art from the late Middle Ages up to the beginning of the 20th century, with the emphasis on Swedish 18th and 19th century painting. Dutch painting from the 17th century is also well represented, and the French 18th century collection is regarded as one of the best in the world. The museum's collection of applied art, design and industrial design spans over a long period, from the 14th century to today. It consists of about 30,000 objects of which a third are ceramics and thereafter, in order of numbers, textiles, glass, precious and non-precious metals, furniture, books etc.The collection of applied art from the Renaissance to the early 20th century is currently not on display but will be shown in a new permanent exhibition in renovated halls. Form and artistic value are the basic criteria for museum acquisitions. Pieces from Sweden and the other Nordic countries are given priority, but other countries are represented, especially those that have been significant for design development. The collection of Prints and Drawings comprises about 500 000 items from late mediaeval times up to the year 1900. Central to the collections are in excess of 2000 master drawings that Carl Gustaf Tessin acquired during his tour of duty as Sweden's ambassador to France. Of particular importance are collections of works by Rembrandt, Watteau, Edouard Manet, Johan Tobias Sergel, Carl Larsson, Carl Fredrik Hill and Ernst Josephson. From the beginning the Royal Castles Collections consisted, as appears from the name, of the parts of the art collections of the royal pleasure-palaces which were owned by the State. Today the Royal Castles Collections at the Nationalmuseum administer the majority of the paintings, drawings, engravings, and sculptures existing in five of the royal pleasure-palaces, i.e. Gripsholm, Drottningholm, Strömsholm, Rosersberg and Ulriksdal. The largest collection is the National Portrait Gallery founded in 1822 at the Gripsholm Castle which today includes 4000 works of art. Gradually, the area of responsibility of the Royal Castles Collections has been extended and now comprises 18 palaces, manors and other royal units. The Gustavsberg Porecelain Collection consists of approximately 35 000 objects, manufactured at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory from the 1830's up until the factory's closing in 1994. Apart from the many objects from the general collection the museum also has two permanent exhibitions: The Modern Form (Den Moderna Formen) exhibition displaying iconic designs and shapes in their original form from 1917 to the present day. The exhibition has everything from concrete chairs to plastic telephones and many other objects in almost any material imaginable. The Art Library is a shared resource for Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet. We are a reference library for everyone with an interest in art – curators and researchers and members of the public alike. The Art Library is one of Scandinavia's largest specialist libraries on art and applied art. Reflecting the art collections and activities of Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet, the material primarily covers the period from the Renaissance to the present day. A large part of the library's collection comprises artist monographs, catalogues of art collections, and auction and exhibition catalogues. The museum doesn't only offer paintings but also craftsmanship in the form of furniture, jewelry, glass and silverware. Some of the most beautiful wooden furniture's from the 16th and 17th century can be viewed here! The entire collection of the National Museum formidable and if art is something that interests you then a visit to the National Museum is a must.

Moderna Museet Now introduces Alice Neel ~ 'Collector of Souls' Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:01 PM PST Stockholm, Sweden - The American artist Alice Neel (1900-1984) is the first to be featured in the new exhibition series Moderna Museet Now. Her imposing portraits and self-portraits earned her influence and acclaim, despite private and professional hardships. In the 1950s, she was under investigation for alleged contacts with the Communist Party. In the years when pop art and abstract expressionism dominated the art scene, her psychologically realistic style was not in great repute, and she lived on welfare.

Christie's London Auction of Impressionist and Modern Art Realises $60.4 Million Posted: 24 Nov 2010 03:48 PM PST LONDON.- A "musketeer" painted by Pablo Picasso was one of the big attractions at an auction of impressionist and modern art at Christie's held in London, where it sold for 5.7 million pounds ($9.3 million). The 1969 work, "Homme a l'Epee," was the second most expensive lot of the session, after Monet's "Au Parc Monceau," that went for 6.3 million pounds ($10.3 million). Painted on canvas, the Picasso work shows an exhuberant and colorful swordsman in a scene that mixes thick brush strokes in which red and yellow predominate. Just by chance the rival auction house Sotheby's is offering this Wednesday to the highest bidder another musketeer - this one painted on wood - by Picasso, executed on July 25, 1969, one day before the one sold at Christie's. Both works figured in the famous 1970 exhibition at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France, together with other musketeers, lovers and gentlemen, all charged with energy and a contagious humor.
