Prepare for summer motoring with an engine compression check
With the wet NZ winter now a distant memory, classic cars around the country are being dusted off and prepared for summer cruising.
That means it's the perfect time to check that everything is in order under the bonnet of your machine. The best way to determine the engine condition of a classic vehicle remains the humble compression test. To make sure everyone knows exactly what they're doing we've included a Guide to Checking Engine Compression in our Tips and Technical Articles section on the NZ Classic Car website.
Compression testing engines is a technique that's been around for over 100 years, is easy to perform and is accurate enough to tell you almost everything you need to know about your engine's top end.
Topics that are included in our online guide:
- Equipment required for compression testing
- Preparing the engine for compression testing
- How to read a vacuum gauge
- Interpreting test results
- Correct figures for a well-tuned engine

NZ Classic Car issue #240 – December 2010
In this month's magazine we look at a fabulous Ferrari F40 – still regarded by many as the ultimate supercar – and one of only a handful of these cars currently resident in New Zealand.
On a slightly less exotic note, we also profile this year's Caltex My Minter Grand Champion – a Ford Cortina 1600GTE – and talk to the young lady who owns and drives this rare NZ-built classic. We also find time to go cruising in a prime example of '50s US automotive excess, a fantastic '58 Chrysler Imperial Coupe.
For those with a more practical attitude – and especially for those considering the importation of a classic car – we have a cautionary tale of car importation woe from one of our writers.
And, of course, we also feature a full report on this year's Dunlop Targa NZ – all the action and all the results from our roving Targa team.
