artwork: Ernest Lawson - "Connecticut Trout Stream", 1920 - Oil on board - 24.5" x 29.5" - Bank of America Collection. At the Crocker Art Museum in "Transcending Vision: American Impressionism, 1870–1940" May 14th to September 25th.

Sacramento, CA.- The 2011 summer programme at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento includes three exhibitions of impressionism. "Transcending Vision: American Impressionism, 1870–1940" opens on May 14th and remains on view until September 25th. Influenced by the new French painting, the American artists who embraced Impressionism from the 1880s to the first decades of the twentieth century were a diverse group of painters whose styles were as varied as the subjects and locales they chose to paint.

This exhibition features 125 paintings from the Bank of America Collection and traces the stylistic evolution of landscape painting as well as the changing attitude towards nature through an examination of works by prominent American artists including George Bellows, George Inness, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Lilla Cabot Perry, and Julian Alden Weir.

"Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism" opens of June 11th and runs until September 18th. This exhibition of some forty paintings includes many of the finest examples of mid-nineteenth through early twentieth-century French and American landscapes from the Brooklyn Museum's collection. The works presented offer a broad survey of landscape painting as practiced by such leading French artists as Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet and their most significant American followers including Frederick Childe Hassam, William Glackens and John Singer Sargent.

Opening on June 25th, "Gardens and Grandeur: Porcelains and Paintings by Franz A. Bischoff" remains on exhibit until October 23rd. Franz Bischoff (1864–1929) began his career as a china painter in Austria but immigrated to the United States in 1885 and became one of the foremost porcelain painters of his day. He won numerous awards and ultimately earned the title "King of the Rose Painters."  Moving from Dearborn, Michigan, to Southern California in 1906, he began to paint still lifes as well as landscapes throughout the Western United States, including the coastal areas of Monterey and Laguna Beach, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and desert regions. This exhibition features approximately 40 examples of Bischoff's work.

On May 6, 1885, Margaret E. Crocker presented the Crocker art gallery building, the grounds, and the E. B. Crocker Collection "in trust for the public" to the public-private partnership of the City of Sacramento and the California Museum Association (now the Crocker Art Museum Association). In doing so, she established a precedent-setting structure of a public-private partnership to over see the Museum and its collection. To thank Margaret for this incredible gift to the people of Sacramento, city leaders planned a Floral Festival on the day the gallery and collection were presented. The Festival drew a reported 20,000 visitors from within the region and abroad. Acknowledged as the largest such event of its day, the Festival was described in at least one account as larger and more splendid than any held to honor Queen Victoria. Articles detailing the event appeared in newspapers throughout California and Nevada and as far away as New York. The newly opened State Agricultural Pavilion, situated on the grounds of the State Capitol, provided the stage for the festivities. The first round of ceremonies, held on that warm Wednesday afternoon, focused on school children with a program of songs, recitations, a Maypole Dance and floral presentations. The evening program featured the formal gift of the art gallery building and collection, which was celebrated with speeches, concerts and dancing until midnight. The Museum continues to build upon the Crocker family legacy by collecting and exhibiting work representing all media, time periods and cultures. This furthers the spirit of the Crockers' love of art and their intention to develop a center for its appreciation in California. Visit the museum's website at ... http://www.crockerartmuseum.org

Los Angeles, CA - Veteran Los Angeles artist, Tony Berlant, opens an exhibition of new works at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, May 5, with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Berlant is renowned for his brilliantly colored metal collages on panel, which range from literal landscapes to pure abstractions. This new work turns toward the mystical, drawing on Eastern spiritual influences to create complex, transcendental compositions. Included in the exhibition are tall, vertical panels featuring a mysterious goddess figure that appears and disappears throughout the work. This goddess image appeared to Berlant when he photographed a section of the plywood floor in his studio and digitally altered the image to create a Rorschach effect. Berlant uses this manipulated image as a ground for several works, with varying amounts of overlaying collage in symmetrical compositions that seem to reference Eastern religious image and pattern, such as found in Tibetan thangkas.

Sydney, AU - On May 21st, the Art Gallery of New South Waleswill unveil a new floor for contemporary art, featuring the John Kaldor Family Gallery. With the inclusion of the Kaldor Collection, the Gallery now holds Australia's most comprehensive representation of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present day.In 2008 John Kaldor and his family announced their intention to give the John Kaldor Family Collection to the state of NSW. This was the catalyst for the government to provide funds to the Gallery to build a state-of-the-art offsite storage facility to allow space within the Gallery to display the collection. The Kaldor Family gift, valued in excess of $35 million, is the largest single art donation to an Australian public gallery and includes over 200 works of art. This extraordinary gift, together with funds generously donated by the Belgiorno-Nettis family, enabled the re-development of the Gallery's old storage area and existing display space to create an entire new floor of 3300 square metres of exhibition space.

New York, NY -  In 1939, at the height of the Sino-Japanese War, a 19-year-old Harvard art history student set off for the remote region of Lijiang, China, in search of the mysterious ancient culture of the Naxi (Nah-shee). Launched on his quest after receiving a gift of a 40-foot Naxi funeral scroll depicting a soul's journey through heaven and hell in a pictographic script, Quentin Roosevelt, grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt, traveled for four months before he finally reached the mountainous region on the Tibetan border. There, with the help of the Reverend James Andrews, a family friend and Pentecostal missionary based in Lijiang, he spent 10 days assembling what was to become one of the most complete collections of Naxi art outside of China.

Painter Joan Mitchell 'Life' in New Alfred A. Knopf Book by Patricia Albers

Posted: 02 May 2011 09:14 PM PDT

artwork: Joan Mitchell who passed away in 1992, was the product of the macho New York City art scene of the 1950's that begat the likes of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock amongst others. Yet, despite her formidable talent and prolific work product, hers isn't nearly the household name it should be.

NEW YORK, NY (AP).- "Joan Mitchell, Lady Painter: A Life" (Alfred A. Knopf), by Patricia Albers: At age 12, Joan Mitchell decided to be a painter. She had shown a flair for writing and for painting, but her father made her choose between the two, warning against being a dilettante. He needn't have worried — Joan turned out to be as driven as he was. When Mitchell died in 1992 at age 67, her paintings sold for millions and belonged to major art museums. But her fame came at a terrible price.

SFMOMA Landmark Exhibition Showcasing the Influence of Gertrude Stein & Her Family

artwork: Henri Matisse - "Blue Nude", 1907 - Oil on canvas - 92.1 x 140.3 cm. The Baltimore Museum of Art: The Cone Collection © 2011 Succession H. Matisse/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. On view in the "Steins Collect" exhibition at SFMOMA until September 6th.

San Francisco.- "The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde" reunites the unparalleled modern art collections of author Gertrude Stein, her brothers Leo and Michael Stein, and Michael's wife, Sarah Stein. Jointly organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Paris, this major touring exhibition gathers approximately 200 iconic paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and illustrated books not only by Matisse and Picasso, who are each represented by dozens of works, but also by Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, Juan Gris, Marie Laurencin, Henri Manguin, Francis Picabia, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Félix Vallotton, among others. "The Steins Collect" will premiere at SFMOMA from May 21 through September 6, 2011, before traveling to Paris and then New York.

artwork: Pablo Picasso - "Portrait of Gertrude Stein", 1906 - Oil on canvas. Collection Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY © Estate of Pablo Picasso/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New YorkSupplemented by a rich array of archival materials including photographs, family albums, film clips, correspondence, and ephemera, the exhibition provides a new perspective on the artistic foresight of this innovative family, tracing their enduring impact on art-making and collecting practices and their inestimable role in creating a new international standard of taste for modern art. Sarah and Michael Stein's return to San Francisco with a cache of important Matisse works in 1935, the same year SFMOMA was founded, was particularly instrumental in the advocacy of modern art on the West Coast as well as the making of the museum's early collection; SFMOMA's presentation will underscore the Steins' deep connections to the Bay Area. "The Stein family legacy is proof that individual collectors make a huge impact on art history," says SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra. "I can't imagine a more timely and inspiring reminder that when it comes to collecting, presenting, and preserving the art of our time, it's the appetite for risk and intellectual engagement with living artists that brings about the most important and lasting outcomes." "It's really impossible to overestimate the role of this eccentric American family as patrons of visual art in early 20th-century Paris," says co-curator Janet Bishop of SFMOMA. "The Steins were true champions of modernism, embracing and defending new art as it was first being made and before it was met with widespread acceptance. They not only avidly collected works when the artists most needed support, but also enthusiastically opened their modest Left Bank homes to anyone wishing to see the most radical art of the day."

As American expatriates living in France, the four Steins were pivotal in shaping the city's vibrant cultural life. Leo Stein (1872–1947) and younger sister Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) were the first to leave the family home in Oakland, traveling to Paris along with millions of tourists to visit the 1900 World's Fair and then relocating to the city in 1902 and 1903, respectively. Sarah Stein (1870–1953) and Michael Stein (1865–1938) soon followed from San Francisco with their eight-year-old son, Allan, arriving in early 1904. The family established their apartments on rue de Fleurus (Leo and Gertrude) and rue Madame (Sarah and Michael) and quickly integrated into the intellectual circles of the Parisian avant-garde. Gertrude and Leo lived modestly off family investments and had to team up to afford their early purchases. "You can either buy clothes or buy pictures. It's that simple. . . . No one who is not very rich can do both," was Gertrude's legendary quote from Hemingway's A Moveable Feast.

The Steins also formed close friendships with the emerging artists they championed, particularly Matisse and Picasso, whose works they aggressively collected and promoted to their associates, almost single-handedly creating markets for their work outside Paris. They dined and vacationed regularly with Matisse and his family, counseled Fernande Olivier on her stormy relationship with Picasso, and made countless introductions. Sarah was instrumental in helping Matisse establish his art school and was among his devoted students. Along the way, the Steins covered their studio walls with cutting-edge paintings by the most controversial artists of the day and were soon overwhelmed with requests to see the collections. They eventually had to establish regular visiting hours so that Gertrude could attend to her writing in peace. Michael and Sarah decided to open their apartment on the same night of the week and so began the prestigious Saturday evening salons where the brightest artists, writers, musicians, and collectors of the day convened to discuss the latest developments. Anyone with a proper referral was welcome to strain their eyes to see the works by candlelight, as neither apartment was wired with electricity yet.

Following its SFMOMA debut, The Steins Collect will travel to the Grand Palais Paris (October 3, 2011, through January 16, 2012) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (February 21 through June 3, 2012). The exhibition is cocurated by Janet Bishop, curator of painting and sculpture at SFMOMA; Cécile Debray, curator of historical collections at the Musée national d'Art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Rebecca Rabinow, associate curator and administrator, Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and Gary Tinterow, Engelhard Chairman, Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among some 40 works by Picasso and approximately 60 by Matisse are such masterpieces as Matisse's Blue Nude (Baltimore Museum of Art), Woman with a Hat (SFMOMA), Self-Portrait (Statens Museum, Copenhagen), and Tea (LACMA); and Picasso's Lady with a Fan (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), Boy Leading a Horse (Museum of Modern Art, New York), Nude with Joined Hands (Museum of Modern Art, New York), and portrait of Gertrude Stein (Metropolitan Museum of Art), among many others.

artwork: Henri Matisse - "Tea", 1919 - Oil on canvas - 140.3 x 211.3 cm. Los Angeles County Museum of Art © Succession H. Matisse, Paris/Artists Rights Society (ARS), NY. On view until September 6th.

Works will be presented roughly chronologically by when they were originally acquired by the family, highlighting major themes and benchmarks of both art history and the Steins' parallel journey: the Paris art scene and Leo's early interests in Cézanne, Renoir, and Manet to the infamous 1905 Salon d'Automne; Leo and Gertrude's joint acquisitions and the rue de Fleurus; Michael and Sarah Stein's particular devotion to Matisse and the rue Madame; Gertrude's collecting patterns, from her complex relationship with Picasso and their artistic influence on each other through her later promotion of Gris, André Masson, and Picabia in the 1920s and '30s; and Michael and Sarah's history-making art advocacy in the United States, from a 1906 trip home, when they brought the first Matisse paintings to be seen on American soil, to their 1935 return to Palo Alto, California. The exhibition will also feature a special gallery devoted to the Académie Matisse, as well as a gallery conceived by SFMOMA project assistant curator Carrie Pilto devoted to the Steins' patronage of modern architecture with their commission of the Villa Stein-de Monzie by Le Corbusier.

SFMOMA holds an internationally recognized collection of modern and contemporary art and was the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th century art. SFMOMA was founded in 1935 under director Grace L. McCann Morley as the San Francisco Museum of Art. The museum rose to international prominence in the 1970s and 80s under director Henry T. Hopkins, adding "Modern" to its title in 1975. In the 1980s SFMOMA took on an active special exhibitions program, both organizing and hosting traveling exhibitions. In January 1995 the museum opened its current location at 151 Third Street, adjacent to Yerba Buena Gardens in the SoMa district. Swiss architect Mario Botta designed the new US $60 million facility which is now an iconic presence within the cityscape of San Francisco. The five-story structure features a stepped and patterned brick facade topped by a soaring cylindrical turret. In Botta's signature style, the turret is finished in alternating bands of black and white stone and topped with a radial pattern of the same material. The rooftop Sculpture Garden opened in 2009. Since opening the new building the museum's collection has more than doubled in size and annual attendance has tripled to around a million visitors annually. The 225,000 square foot building is about to be expanded further, architecture firm Snøhetta having been commissioned to create a new extension to accommodate the ongoing growth of the museum's programs and audiences and to showcase the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection of contemporary art. ZURICH.- Tatiana Trouvé (born 1968 in Cosenza, lives and works in Paris) became known for her room constructions, architectonic interventions, and snake-like metal sculptural objects that are seemingly solidified in movement – as if frozen. In her artworks Tatania Trouvé often explores the association between the "inner" and the "outer" on both material and psychological levels. Psychological spaces are turned outwards and become concrete, uncanny "inner" spaces. For this, her first solo exhibition in Switzerland, Tatiana Trouvé is exhibiting an installative spatial structure with architectonic interventions and large format drawings. On view at the Migros Museum until 21 February, 2010.

artwork: Frank Stella (1936) - Uzlany II, 1973 - Felt, soft board, collage, oil on canvas on fiberboard - 223 x 231 x 10 cm.

THE HAGUE, NL - For the first time in its history, the Gemeentemuseum presents a vast display of modern and contemporary art filling two whole floors of its main building. The new exhibition, entitled XXth Century, uses both major historical events like the Wall Street Crash and the Russian revolution to suggest the background against which untiring artistic experimentation constantly transformed the face of Western art. Via outstanding works by artists like Mesdag, Toorop, Van Doesburg, Picasso, Constant, Mondrian, Lewitt, Merz, Lüpertz and Baselitz, it reveals a world still inward-looking at the start of the period but increasingly interested in new external developments as time went on.
