Picasso Masterpieces To Be Hosted at the de Young Museum in San Francisco Posted: 22 May 2011 10:52 PM PDT San Francisco.- The travelling exhibition "Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris" reaches the de Young Museum in San Francisco on June 11th. The de Young will host this extraordinary exhibition of more than 100 masterpieces by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) from the permanent collection of Paris's world-renowned Musée National Picasso until October 9th. The once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, made possible only because of the temporary closure of the Musée Picasso until 2012 for extensive renovations, comprises paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints drawn from every phase of the artist's career. The Musée Picasso's holdings stand apart from any other collections of Picasso because they represent the artist's personal collection — works that the highly self-aware artist kept for himself with the intent of shaping his own artistic legacy. Picasso's lengthy career spanned both world wars, the Spanish civil war and the Korean War, and each conflict exerted a presence in his work. The impending chaos of World War II, for instance, is reflected in such canvases as "Man with a Straw Hat and Ice Cream Cone" (1938) and "Cat Seizing a Bird" (1939). The works on view demonstrate the wide range of artistic styles and forms that the artist mastered, including, "Celestina" (1904), from the artist's Blue Period, "Two Brothers" (1906), from the Rose Period; Expressionist studies for "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907); the Cubist "Man with a Guitar" (1911), the Neoclassical "Portrait of Olga" (1917), the artist's wife; the proto-Surrealist "Two Women Running on a Beach" (1922); "Portrait of Dora Maar" (1937), the artist's lover and famed French artist; six Surrealist bronze heads of the artist's mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter; the "Head of a Bull" (1942) fabricated from a bicycle seat and handlebars; the bronze "Goat" (1950); the six life-size bronze "Bathers" (1956); and the late self-portrait "The Matador" (1970). The de Young Museum opened in 1895 as an outgrowth of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. It was housed in an Egyptian style structure which had been the Fine Arts Building at the fair. The building was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1906 and was demolished and replaced in 1929 with a Spanish Renaissance style structure. This building was originally decorated with cast-concrete ornaments on the façade. As part of the agreement that created the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 1972, the de Young's collection of European art was sent to the Legion of Honor. In compensation, the de Young received the right to display the bulk of the organization's anthropological holdings. These include significant pre-Hispanic works from Teotihuacan and Peru, as well as indigenous tribal art from sub-Saharan Africa. The building was severely damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It in turn was demolished and replaced by a new building in 2005. Constructed of warm, natural materials including copper, stone, wood and glass, the new de Young blends with and complements its natural surroundings. Ribbons of windows erase the boundary between the museum interior and the lush natural environment outside, and four public entrances segue naturally from the park's pathways, welcoming visitors from all directions. The building's dramatic copper facade is perforated and textured to replicate the impression made by light filtering through a tree canopy, creating an artistic abstraction on the exterior of the museum that resonates with the de Young's tree-filled park setting. The building's copper skin, chosen for its changeable quality through oxidation, will assume a rich patina over time that will blend gracefully with the surrounding natural environment. Currently the de Young's collection exceeds 27,000 works of art and is renowned for its holdings in American art of all periods, including painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and works on paper; the art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; and costumes and textiles representing a wide variety of Eastern and Western traditions. Masterworks of the Venetian Renaissance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Posted: 22 May 2011 06:37 PM PDT HOUSTON, TX.- Starting today, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH), in conjunction with the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS), the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will present 25 masterworks of the Venetian Renaissance—12 paintings and 13 drawings—that will include two of the greatest paintings of the Italian Renaissance: Titian's Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto (1556–1559). The two paintings have never before traveled to the United States. The exhibition will also include paintings by Tintoretto, Veronese and Lotto from the collection of the National Galleries. The MFAH's presentation of Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland culminates the American tour of this exhibition, which debuted at the High in October 2010. To commemorate the landmark exhibition, the MFAH will produce a comprehensive publication to place the Diana paintings in the context of both Titian's life's work and of their extraordinary history. In addition to Titian's Diana paintings, Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting will include 10 other paintings that illuminate the depth of the National Galleries of Scotland's collection of Venetian Renaissance works. The paintings—among them Titian's Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Venus Rising from the Sea; Lorenzo Lotto's Virgin and Child with Saints; Jacopo Tintoretto's Christ Carried to the Tomb; and Jacopo Bassano's Adoration of the Magi—will be accompanied by 13 drawings by Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese and other Venetian Renaissance artists. The Legendary Diana Paintings of Titian Originally commissioned by King Phillip II of Spain as part of a series of six paintings, Titian's Diana paintings were acquired by the Duke of Orleans in the eighteenth century. The Diana paintings then entered the private Bridgewater Collection following the French Revolution and passed by descent to the 5th Earl of Ellesmere, who became the 6th Duke of Sutherland and who placed the pair on long-term loan to the National Galleries of Scotland in 1945. In 2008, the National Galleries of Scotland, together with the National Gallery of London, were given the opportunity to acquire these works so that they may remain in a public collection in the United Kingdom. In less than five months, the National Galleries of Scotland and London secured the funds to acquire Diana and Actaeon for the nation. The painting will be shared by the two institutions. Currently the two institutions are in the midst of a campaign to acquire Diana and Callisto, to ensure that both of Titian's Diana paintings remain in public collections in the U.K. Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto Titian's Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto were both painted for King Philip II of Spain between 1556 and 1559, at the height of Titian's career. Part of a series of six large mythological pictures made for the King, the Diana paintings accompanied the Danaë and Venus and Adonis (both at The Prado, Madrid); Perseus and Andromeda (Wallace Collection, London) and the Rape of Europa (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston). The Diana paintings, completed when Titian was in his 70s, are the penultimate works in the series of scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, and represent the Venetian master's accumulated skill and experience. Designed as a pair—a stream flows from one to the other—one painting tells the story of the goddess Diana as she learns that her handmaiden Callisto is pregnant by Jupiter; the other depicts the moment Diana and her nymphs are caught bathing by the hunter Actaeon. The Diana paintings are richer in chromatic range and compositional complexity than their predecessors. "These two paintings have long been recognized as among Titian's very finest creations and as supreme masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance art," commented John Leighton, Director of the National Galleries of Scotland. "Their ambitious scale, the masterful unity of color and subject matter, the art-historical significance and their excellent condition all contribute to the fame and reputation of these works." The Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art ~ Turkey’s First Contemporary Art Museum Posted: 22 May 2011 06:25 PM PDT Contemporary art may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Turkey, but for the last 25 years, the country has developed a thriving market and some spectacular artists. During the 1980s, the country opened up to western artistic influences and the social elite started to collect contemporary works. Auction houses, which had previously sold only antiques, carpets and traditional Turkish paintings, soon began catering to these collectors and in 1987, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts launched the Istanbul Biennale, a major international contemporary art event that today ranks with the biennials of Venice and São Paolo. But it was one young couple, Can and Sevda Elgiz, who in 2001 single-handedly changed the very structure of the Turkish art world and created a climate that would support contemporary artists within Turkey for the first time. With the help of curator Vasif Kortun, curator of the third Istanbul Biennale and already an internationally known figure at the time, they founded Proj4L and later the Museum Elgiz, the city's first museum for modern and contemporary art, with holdings from their own collection. Originally established as a gallery, and located in the Levent district of Istanbul, Proj4L evolved, while maintaining its mission to promote the development of contemporary art in Turkey. During its first 4 years many well-known contemporary Turkish artists of the day were presented to the world art stage at Proje4L, as they were given the chance to open their first exhibitions. The institution was also the first Turkish contemporary art space to house exhibitions of Turkish artists that were known internationally but not yet recognized in Turkey. Halil Altındere, Kutluğ Ataman, Hüseyin Çağlayan, Aydan Murtezaoğlu, Bülent Şangar, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Cengiz Çekil, Hale Tenger, Fikret Atay, Erinç Seymen, Cengiz Tekin, Haluk Akakçe and Leyla Gediz are only some of the artists whose works were shown in Proje4L between 2001-2005. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Charles Esche, Chris Dercon, Dan Cameron, Kari Immoen, Ayşe Erkmen, Francsco Bonami, Jerome Sans, Erden Kosova, Marta Kuzma, Ali Akay, Suhail Malik and Paolo Colombo all gave lectures and joined panel discussions at Proj4L. Maintaining high quality standards, the museum quickly gained an international reputation in a very short period and supported Turkish artists in the world-wide contemporary art scene. However, as new art institutions and museums bloomed in the Turkish art scene, the need for gallery space became less urgent and the Egliz was re-opened (at the same location) on the 25th of December, 2004 as a fully-fledged museum, under the name 'Proje4L/Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art' to host the Elgiz Collection. In 2011, while celebrating its 10th anniversary, the museum moved into a new, purpose-built structure designed by Dr Elgiz under Beybi Giz plaza, one of the many sky-scapers in Maslak business district of Istanbul. With over 2,000 square meters of space, the Elgiz Museum is an international standard museum with a world class collection of Turkish and international contemporary art. Aside from the main hall, reserved for displaying selections from the Elgiz Collection, there are two large temporary exhibition galleries (known as the 'Project Rooms' and generally used to promote young Turkish artists, often with their first solo exhibitions), an archive room, conference hall and cafe. Lectures and seminars are regularly held in the conference space by inviting International collectors to share their enthusiasm and their experiences in collecting art. Kunsthaus Zürich Presents Work by Georges Seurat One of the Fathers of Modern Art Posted: 22 May 2011 06:22 PM PDT ZURICH.- Under the heading 'Figure in Space', the Kunsthaus Zürich presents work by one of the fathers of modern art, Georges Seurat, from 2 October 2009 until 17 January 2010. A colleague of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh's, Seurat brought a scientific precision to bear on Impressionist painting. Where there was nothing but light and atmosphere he introduced rational dialogues between figures and the space surrounding them, as attested by the over 60 high-quality paintings and drawings the Kunsthaus Zürich has assembled from important public and private collections in London, Paris, New York and Washington. |
Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents Photographers Paul Steinitz and Ja’bagh Kaghado Posted: 22 May 2011 06:21 PM PDT MOSCOW - Moscow Museum of Modern Art and BrainStorm Management present an unprecedented exhibition of the legendary Paul Steinitz – photographer, visual artist and publisher, known by all and by no one. Paul Steinitz, whose silhouette reminds both of an incredibly flamboyant artist and an impoverished vagabond, has been an obscure legend of the Paris and New York underground of the last two decades. To gain proof of it, one needs only to flick through the copies of Amaan Magazine that he has published since the mid-90s. On its pages are writers, filmmakers, designers, and top models – everyone Paul Steinitz photographed was transformed by his vision and later earned international recognition. |
Ashcan School Art exhibited in New York City Posted: 22 May 2011 06:20 PM PDT New York City - The painters of the Ashcan School just wanted to have fun. They chronicled the lives of poor city dwellers, but they were neither social critics nor reformers. Robert Henri, George Luks, John Sloan and other early-20th-century American realists identified with the group were high-spirited fellows who prided themselves on fielding a baseball team that regularly defeated those of the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. |
