Royal Collection Exhibitions Celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012 Posted: 06 May 2011 09:49 PM PDT LONDON.- The Royal Collection today announced a programme of exhibitions at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and a touring exhibition to five UK venues to mark Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee next year. Jonathan Marsden, Director of the Royal Collection, said, 'Our exhibitions celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee through many of the finest works of art in the Royal Collection, and we are particularly delighted to be sharing, on behalf of The Queen, some of these great treasures with museums and galleries across the UK. This is a fitting tribute to Her Majesty's commitment over the past 60 years to the care and conservation of the Collection and to increasing public access.' The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years The Drawings Gallery, Windsor Castle 4 February 2012 – January 2013 Sixty photographs of The Queen, including the work of leading press photographers of the past six decades, will go on display at Windsor Castle to celebrate Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. The exhibition presents a portrait of The Queen's reign as captured in fleeting moments on both official occasions and at relaxed family gatherings. With the advent of photography, the boundaries between the officially approved and the spontaneously captured image of the monarch were irreversibly blurred. Today, through the reach of modern media, the image of Her Majesty is familiar to millions around the world. Most of the exhibition The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years has been selected from photographs submitted by the Royal Rota photographic organisations. Royal Treasures: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 16 March – 16 September 2012 An exhibition of some of the finest treasures from the Royal Collection will go on display at The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse in 2012. Royal Treasures: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration reflects the tastes of monarchs and other members of the royal family who have shaped one of the world's great art collections. The selection of 100 outstanding works has been made across the entire breadth of the Royal Collection, from eight royal residences and over five centuries of collecting, and includes paintings, drawings, miniatures, watercolours, manuscripts, furniture, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery. Highlights include paintings by Rembrandt, Canaletto and Monet, drawings by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Holbein, and Imperial Easter Eggs by Fabergé. Most of the works will be shown in Scotland for the first time. Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomy The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 4 May – 7 October 2012 The largest ever exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci's studies of the human body will be shown at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace in 2012. Leonardo has long been recognized as one of the great artists of the Renaissance, but he was also a pioneer in the understanding of human anatomy. He intended to publish his ground-breaking work in a treatise on anatomy, and had he done so his discoveries would have transformed European knowledge of the subject. But on Leonardo's death in 1519 the drawings remained a mass of undigested material among his private papers and their significance was effectively lost to the world for almost 400 years. Today they are among the Royal Collection's greatest treasures. Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration The Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace August and September 2012 (Additional dates will be added) Diamond, the hardest natural material known, carries associations of endurance and longevity. These qualities, allied to the purity, magnificence and value of the stones, have for centuries led rulers to deploy diamonds in regalia, jewellery and precious objects. Individual diamonds have achieved great renown, passing down the generations and between enemies or allies as potent symbols of sovereignty and as precious gifts. A spectacular exhibition at Buckingham Palace will show the many ways in which diamonds have been used by British monarchs over the last 200 years. The exhibition includes an unprecedented display of a number of The Queen's personal jewels – those inherited by Her Majesty or acquired during her reign. The exhibition will reveal how many of these extraordinary stones have undergone a number of transformations, having been re-cut or incorporated into new settings during their fascinating history. |

The Didrichsen Art Museum Shows Hugo Simberg's 'Viipuri Bay' Paintings Posted: 06 May 2011 08:32 PM PDT Helsinki.Finland - The Didrichsen Art Museum presents "Hugo Simberg & Niemi Ferry" until the 28th of August. Hugo Simberg spent nearly all the summers of his life at Niemenlautta, the family estate on the north-western coast of Viipuri Bay. So great was its inspiration that he immortalised its landscapes and people in his works. Real places also served as the stage for his symbolist motifs – such as the dance on Niemenlautta jetty ("Winger Dance" 1903) where people are partnered with skeletons. |

The Power of Giving Examined in New Exhibition at Museum in Dresden Posted: 06 May 2011 07:45 PM PDT DRESDEN.- The U'mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) in Dresden, Germany are collaborating on an exhibition project that will examine, compare and contrast the role of the gift as well as illustrate the gift-giving rituals and ceremonies within two very different cultures: the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation and the German aristocracy. "We have all experienced gift-giving. By exploring ceremonial gift-giving in the baroque Saxon court and the Kwakwaka'wakw Big House, this exhibition challenges us to look under the surface of this everyday human activity and think about how gift-giving is both a physical and symbolic exchange. Around 50 pieces of regalia (a portion of the U'mista collection) will be on display in the Kunsthalle im Lipsiusbau Dresden starting May 7th. |
The Tucson Museum of Art Shows "The Legacy of Surrealism" Posted: 06 May 2011 07:44 PM PDT Tucson, AZ.- "The Legacy of Surrealism: Selections from the Permanent Collection" goes on exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art on June 11th and remains on view until September 18th. Surrealism, first coined by Apollinaire in 1917 to describe a movement that addressed the intersection of avant-garde art with technological progress, encompasses the free-form practice of automatism, the chance reliance on accident, the shapes and forms of biomorphism, and the use of found objects. Surrealism is an outgrowth of Dada, the avant-garde art form that emerged in Zurich in 1916 (ending in 1923) and spread throughout Europe and the United States as a reaction to World War I and modernist abstraction. Both movements railed against artistic constraint and bourgeois values, and shared a concern with philosophy, psychology, poetry, and social revolution. This exhibition presents works by several artists who are identified as Surrealists along with modern and contemporary artists who have been influenced by Surrealist philosophy and stylistic tendencies. Surrealism began in France by several artists who had been engaged in Dada's emphasis on moral revolt and the conflation of art making with everyday life. When the Dadaists disbanded in 1923, many continued artists their interest in avant-garde art making, newly articulated by André Breton, whose Manifesto of Surrealism published in 1924 called for a continuation of nonconformist activity and a focus on desire and surprise. To Breton, Surrealism was marked by "a certain psychic automatism that corresponds rather closely to the state of dreaming." Two types of Surrealism emerged, inspired by the writings of Sigmund Freud, whose theories of the unconscious mind and the mechanism of repression gained widespread interest in intellectual and artistic circles at the turn of the twentieth century. Freud's theories concentrated on the visionary, the poetic, and the metaphoric power of the unconscious, manifested by the Surrealists in either improvisational automatic writing, drawing, and painting, or the illusionistic and realistic depictions of dream-inspired images. Unlike the pure abstractions of modernist painters who worked away from tangible form, the Surrealists attempted to work toward an interior image to achieve a new kind of perception unconstrained by conscious. Surrealism formally ceased by 1945, but many of the artists who were associated with the movement continued to create art within its artistic parameters into the 1960s and 1970s. The free-form effects of automatic painting and writing, along with the idea of tapping into the unconscious, took hold in the form of Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s, and subsequent realist iterations of the dream has surfaced in the decades that followed until present day. While the aim to ignite a social revolution through Surrealist practices may have long been replaced in today's art by Post-Modern strategies, the aesthetic legacy of this movement continues to intrigue and inspire artists today. First established in 1924 as the Tucson Fine Arts Association, the Museum made its home in the Kingan House on Franklin Street in the El Presidio Historic District. In 1954 the association was officially renamed the Tucson Art Center to establish our exhibition and education mission. In 1975 the Tucson Art Center moved to its present location and became the caretaker of five historic properties (La Casa Cordova, Romero House, Edward Nye Fish House, Stevens/Duffield House and the J. Knox Corbett House) and changed its name to the Tucson Museum of Art to reflect its collecting activities. Today the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block encompasses an entire city block in historic downtown, and features original and traveling exhibitions focusing on Art of Latin America, Art of the American West, Modern and Contemporary Art and Asian Art as well as tours, education programs, studio art classes, and Museum Store to delight and educate visitors. The Tucson Museum of Art serves the city and surrounding regions and is committed to broadening public access to the arts, enriching daily life. The Kunstmuseum in Bern (Switzerland) ~ and The Zentrum Paul Klee Receive Our Editor Posted: 06 May 2011 07:30 PM PDT Outstanding works by Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Ferdinand Hodler and Meret Oppenheim have made the Museum of Fine Arts Bern an institution with an international reputation and well worth a visit. At the present time, the constantly growing and evolving collection consists of over 3,000 paintings and sculptures as well as 48,000 drawings, prints, photographs, videos and films. The roots of the museum's history reach back to the revolutionary ideas proliferating in Europe towards the end of the 18th century which, in 1809, led to the founding of the National Art Collection in Bern and, in 1879, to the opening of the first museum building. The Museum of Fine Arts Bern is the oldest art museum in Switzerland with a permanent collection and houses works covering eight centuries, making it not only one of the most important and variegated collections in Switzerland but, due to its substantial collection of works from the classical modern period, also one of international significance. The present building in the Hodlerstrasse was built between 1876 and1879 under the guidance of architect Eugen Stettler. Between 1932 and1936 under the guidance of the architect Karl Indermühle (from the firm of Salvisberg & Brechbühl), the museum was extended. In 1983, the local Bern architects Atelier 5 designed a further extension. Currently the museum are planning yet another expansion, to improve the facilities available for displaying its expanding collection of contemporary art. The museum has close ties to the nearby Paul Klee Center, and hosted the Paul Klee Foundation's collection until they moved to their own, new building. The Paul Klee Cultural Centre, Bern was designed by Ptitzker award winning architect Renzo Piano, and opened in 2005. Around 4,200 of Paul Klee's paintings, watercolours and drawings as well as archives and biographical material, have been brought together at the Centre, which also hosts exhibitions and cultural events. It is currently jointly hosting "Lust and Vice: The Seven Deadly Sins from Dürer to Nauman" with the Kunstmuseum Bern. The exhibition provides a fascinating record of artistic preoccupation with this theme from medieval times to the present day. "Lust and Vice: The Seven Deadly Sins from Dürer to Nauman" also addresses the relevance of the notion of sin in contemporary society and how our culture justifies changes in values. The exhibition is split between the two venues, with pride, avarice, envy and anger at the Kunstmuseum, lust, gluttony and sloth displayed at the Paul Klee Centre. Visitors to Bern should not miss visiting both of these oustanding museums. Visit both museum's websites : http://www.kunstmuseumbern.ch ; and the Paul Klee Cultural Centre (Zentrum Paul Klee) at: www.zpk.org/ |

"The Myth of Frankenstein" at Frank Pictures Gallery Posted: 06 May 2011 07:26 PM PDT
Santa Monica, CA - Each one of Patricia Terrell O'Neal's paintings was inspired by her subconscious reaction to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The project began at O'Neal's French residence, the castle, Chateau St. Philippe, in Savoie, France, a few miles from a similar chateau high in the Alps where Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, age 19, and her lover (and later husband) Percy Bysshe Shelley, visited Lord Byron at the Villa Diodati. There they challenged one another to each compose a story of their own, the contest being won by whoever wrote the scariest tale. Mary conceived an idea after she fell into a waking dream or nightmare during which she saw "the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. |
